We live along a little sleepy bayou in Southern Louisiana. Like most people, we have a wharf and boats. My husband was born and raised on this bayou and as is typical of the culture, loves to hunt and fish. Not only is hunting and fishing a sport in this area, but it also provides food for the family.

My husband has crab cages that he loves to throw off the wharf and most days there are multiple crabs in each one. Part of the process of preparing crabs, whether for boiling or for other dishes, is to “purge” them. Normally, my husband lets them soak in a bucket. Not this time!

Hubby came inside and asked me to come and take a picture of something. The rest of his words were, “You are probably going to want to kill me.” That sounded a little ominous. When your husband tells you that, you get up and follow him – as quickly as possible.

It just so happened that I had given Calypso a bath that morning and she was in her kennel drying off. That was the direction he was headed. That is also when I began to panic. Calypso is a long haired shepherd and summers in the south are harsh and he’s always threatening to shave her. (I think he also knows better but likes to tease.) So, you can understand my panic as he seemed to be walking straight towards the kennel and I couldn’t see Calypso at the time. The kennel is a white picket fence and impossible to see through.

I couldn’t take it any longer and asked if he had done something to Calypso. He laughed and said no, but his behavior was a little odd. What did I need to take a picture of? As I approached the kennel, he stopped next to Calypso’s pool and started laughing. About that time I saw something move and screamed. That crazy man had put his crabs in Calypso’s pool!

The moral of this story? I guess there’s a little bitty kid in all of us. This is the same crazy man who dressed like a scarecrow and stood in his garden to scare a rabbit! You can see why I’m a little leery when I’m asked to come out and see something! I’ll provide that picture for your entertainment as well.

Life in the South – it can be unpredictable at times!

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water. (Cue the Jaws music please.)

Calypso all nice and clean, for a while anyway.

And, complete with straw! Unlike the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, this one has a heart!

Calypso enjoys the garden.
