I’m not sure how many folks drive to see the very last waterfall along the narrow “river road”, which can be a deterrent itself and judging by the lack of vehicles almost no one does. It appears to be a waterfall enjoyed mostly by locals.
Ever the adventurous, we drove to the end of the road & found the last waterfall. You actually have to find the trail & hike thru the woods on the side of the mountain about 1/4 mile. Like Lucy & Ethel, common sense didn’t factor in. We parked & outfitted ourselves with backpacks & hiking sticks, bear spray & I even have a bear bell. Yes, there is such a thing. We were ready for anything we might encounter on the trail.
Along the road are several little campgrounds, each with a few back-in slots and this is where we parked. As we were “suiting” up, a camper stopped by to chat. He was a truck driver and full of stories & he entertained us for quite a while. He was from the area and told us it was one of his favorite places to get away. He told stories of hunting deer and bear in the area. We told him we were from south Louisiana and the only bear encounters we had were at the zoo. We bid goodbye and crossed the road to the “trail between the trees”, Ethel with his bear spray and me with my bear bell jingling from my backpack. I didn’t dare look back to see the amusement that I am quite sure was on his face.
We hadn’t gone very far when I couldn’t control the laughter. The more I laughed, the more I jingled and the more I laughed. When I could finally speak, I told hubby that man must be calling bear patrol on us. Two country folk headed into the wilderness with their bear spray and bear bell. That man probably thought he had seen it all.
We continued hiking and rounded a corner where we saw a trickle of water in the woods not even 1/4 mile from the road. That was all it took to set me off again. We laughed so hard we couldn’t walk. I didn’t even take a picture. In hindsight I should have, it was that bad. I’m sure there’s more water in the spring (see pic) but it was barely more than a trickle.
We headed back to the truck laughing. That man we met is probably still laughing. It was a successful day. Met a new person. Provided entertainment & I was able to laugh without trigeminal pain. It was a good day.
