An October birthday trip to the Tennessee mountains (2022)

I wanted to go to the mountains, any mountain, for my birthday which is in October. I love the mountains, They soothe my soul. For a while, the trip seemed like it wasn’t going to take place. Hubby had mouth surgery and we weren’t quite sure how his recovery would be. It ended up taking the projected recovery time and the trip was on.

A favorite trip destination for us is the state of Tennessee. It’s within a hard day’s drive or an easy two days of towing. We chose the two-day relaxing drive. The first night’s stopover was the Hoover Complex south of Birmingham. It is essentially a parking lot at an athletic complex. When we arrived we were perhaps the tenth camper in the parking lot. It quickly filled up. We have no complaints and may stay there on our next trip north. It is a good overnight stop; has a paved parking lot, full hookups, and easy access. It sits on the side of a hill so the leveling is a slight issue, at least on our site and the ones around us.

I pilfered the following pictures of Tellico Plains, TN from their website. My focus was on the LEAVES and neglected to take pictures of the little town. I fulfilled a bucket list item of mine on this visit to Tennessee. I went to my very first farmers’ market! Crossed that baby off my bucket list but it won’t be the last! I had the best time! I was determined to buy all the vegetables I could hold, then hubby gently led me to the register. Lol A note to self for my next farmers’ market visit, take the cute little bag out of my back bag and use it!

Tellico Plains is a sweet little town with a big history; AND, I am going to cut and paste from the website. They did a great job and who am I to mess with “perfection”? Just a heads up!

“Tellico Plains is located in East Tennessee, a small town in Monroe County that holds the key to our state’s greatest known natural beauty. It was named for the nearby Tellico River, although the history of this plot of land goes deep and wide.

There are less than 1,000 people currently living in Tellico Plains, with a population fluctuating around 880. It makes for a tight community and sweet atmosphere, a small town nestled at the foot of great beauty.

Here, you can see Tellico Plains in 1938. The history of the area goes back over 10,000 years, however, with a deep and beautiful tie to Native American culture. Archaeological points have tied the area to a Cherokee settlement that thrived for many years.

It’s at the foot of the Cherohala Skyway and boasts the Cherokee & Nantahala National Forests.”

The Cherohala Skyway is a 43-mile National Scenic Byway that runs from Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, NC.
