Taking charge of your cancer care will give you the best outcome.
“This book is a “must read” for every adult as cancer remains our greatest enemy. If you have experience with cancer, via a family member or friend, once you start reading this book, it will be hard to put down.”~ Peter L. Pedersen Professor of Biological Chemistry & Oncology, Johns Hopkins University
The Cancer Solution: Taking Charge of your Life with Cancer. Written by Jack C. Westman, M.D., this thoroughly researched cancer handbook shows how much of the failure of the War on Cancer ─ and more importantly, much of the potential for finally winning it ─ has to do with the definition of cancer. This book is a wake-up call and a call to action for cancer patients, their loved ones and the general public.
Cancer is the cause of death for one in three of us in the United States and inevitably affects all of our lives.
Persons who are inquisitive about and actively involved in their own health care have better health outcomes. The Cancer Solution is readable for laypersons and contains technical details for health care professionals. It gives a broad overview of the different forms of cancer treatment and cancer research; provides technical details so that it can be used as a reference for questions about specific aspects of cancer; describes complementary cancer care; and encourages laypersons and professionals to become informed advocates for federal and private funding of research that focuses on preventing and treating the underlying causes of cancer.
The traditional focus on killing cancer cells puts the cart before the horse and explains why the conventional treatment of different forms of cancer has not won the War on Cancer. In fact, decades of potential progress against cancer have been lost.
The Cancer Solution offers science-based guidance and encouragement that will enable patients, their families, and health care professionals to become informed advocates for funding cutting edge cancer research and care.
Public understanding of the situation and pressure for change is needed to point cancer research and care in a preventive and curative direction by supporting and funding the initiatives of the American Association of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute that focus on the process through which cancer cells develop ─ neoplasia.
“Dr. Westman’s personal experience with cancer led him to extensively research the state of cancer care. Strengthening the body’s own immune system to prevent and control cancer has shown very promising results, but it is largely ignored by mainstream cancer research and treatment. If you care about winning the war on cancer, this book will motivate you to advocate for more funding for this line of research. ~ Stephen L. Swanson, Past Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Cancer Society

My Review –
The cover of this book isn’t fancy. It doesn’t have to be. This is one of those times when you do not choose a book by its cover. The information is what is important and as I read each page in this book, my eyes were opened wider and wider.
You see, I have friends with cancer, and I have two rare blood disorders. My oncologist explained it to me as a double-edged sword. I may develop Leukemia if untreated or I may develop Leukemia if treated. I often wondered what my decision would be if I were faced with the dilemma of prolonging my life for any amount of time with chemotherapy or choosing not to do chemo and just enjoy the time I had left. I didn’t realize that it might one day become a reality. At that point, when you are sitting across from your doctor, receiving devastating news, all of your previous conceived notions take flight and you are suddenly forced into a state of shock and making decisions based on panic and not education. I didn’t want to be that person and for that reason alone, I am glad this book came through my email when it did.
Dr. Westman suffered through cancer alongside his wife and he learned a lot along the journey that would last more than twenty years. He then sat down to write a practical, easy to understand book to help others through their journey.
Dr. Westman discusses the health care system and enlightens the reader on the tug of war between doctors, hospitals, health care, patients, pharmaceuticals, and on and how each one of us has failed ourselves in the battle of cancer. There is no ONE person or entity to blame. It is a culmination of all put together. There is a wonderful Table of Contents for use once you’ve read the book.
Dr. Westman has compiled a book of research that will aid you in making the correct decision for you or a loved one with cancer. If I pointed out the most important things in the book, I would simply be reprinting the book in its entirety right here. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether or not you or a loved one has experienced cancer. I think the information transcends illnesses.
