ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Brian Michael Good is a self-made man. He has lived a life buffeted by character-altering hurricanes. His life storms began in his trauma-filled childhood within his dysfunctional family.

He survived childhood verbal, physical, and sexual abuse; the death of two siblings; the stigma of being homeless – not once, but three times; two bankruptcies; a six-pound cancer that was doubling every two months; a near-fatal suicide attempt in 2003; the death of his best friend; three divorces; and the rejection of his only daughter.

How can one man encounter so many hurricanes, survive them, learn from them, and then strive to make the world a better place? This was the question Brian asked himself that led to “Never Surrender Your Soul.”

Excerpt –

SURRENDERING YOUR SOUL

We are taught to nurture the health of our body, mind, and soul; often they are neglected. While our health declines as each year passes, we value our soul more knowing that it is all that will remain.

We are born with free will, a soul, and a ticket to the afterlife. Your soul comes with a passport and visa with a destination of the afterlife. Your passport is your free will, which allows you to choose your belief system. You should nurture your belief system (your visa) as a mother nurtures an infant. It is best to choose a belief system that allows you to be fair-minded and even-handed. Be aware you may lose your visa based on the belief system you choose, making your ticket to the afterlife with your soul unable to reach your desired destination. Your ticket to the afterlife is your soul. Decide to keep your ticket to the afterlife by never surrendering your soul and count yourself a survivor.

If you surrender your visa, making your passport useless and thus your ticket to the afterlife worthless, one may not make it to the afterlife except for Weshemehe [my universal word for “God”] of second chances.

Reincarnation is a possibility. Even if one could prove reincarnation to be true, each life of reincarnation would most likely get substantially harder… especially if you kill, die by suicide, steal, or take someone’s free will. If you screwed up in a lifetime and surrendered your soul in your present life, you have until your last breath to meet your true destiny. A true destiny must be met without greed or thirst for money. It must be unselfish and spiritual in nature, only then will Weshemehe consider giving you a second chance. Continue reading

My Review –

Reflections of a Successful Wallflower is an extraordinary book. Andrea Michaels tells the story of her life and her life in the business with humor and candidness. You find yourself holding your breath as you read through the exploits and “almost didn’t come to fruition” stories.

Andrea Michaels is someone who knows how to get it done and has proven this on many occasions. Before reading the book, I honestly had never heard of the author, but I was always curious about how huge events were pulled off. I found the book enlightening in both areas.

Reflections of a Successful Wallflower is both entertaining and informative and written with a sense of humor. I am giving the book five stars.

Yep! It’s Monday – ALL. DAY. LONG.

Don’t know what your Monday’s are like, but I try never to schedule absolute things because it all gets shot to the swamp!

At this very moment you might call what I’m doing, multi-tasking. This is how my Monday is shaping up:

I am writing this blog post, stopping to upload photos, communicating by email with one of the admins at Southern Charm Planners on Facebook (we are sending an Excel spreadsheet back and forth tweaking it), checking Facebook for adds and responses needed in the group, completing Etsy orders for my shop, listening for the dogs to bark telling me UPS is here to deliver a package, talking by speaker phone on my computer to my brother, responding via My Chart app on my phone with my doctor, and I stopped somewhere in the middle to brush my teeth. I am sort of dressed – if you call yoga pants and my pajama shirt and bare feet dressed. Yep! It’s Monday alright.

It’s been a busy past week. My goal is walk three miles three times a week. Last week, it was Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. NEVER. AGAIN. It just worked out that way; normally I walk Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but with it being Holy Week and loads of church activities going on, we (my walking partners) walked when we could.

Friends of mine who homeschool brought their children over to plant their tomato plants that they had been growing for the last few weeks at home. The first lesson (Hubby is teaching gardening this semester) consisted of plowing and cultivating and planting potatoes in the garden. They also learned about composting.

This past week, they got to see how big the potato plants are getting and then they planted their tomato plants.

The little ones were fascinated with the chickens and Hubby took them in to play and check for eggs. The littlest child (2 years) threw a fit when he was taken out of the coop. We had to let him go back in to play for a while. The chickens were so kind to him. He would gently put his hand on the chicken‘s back and the chicken would sit and then he’d pet the chicken’s back. Each time the chicken stood, he would repeat his little gesture and the chicken would sit back down. It was so cute to watch.

The next youngest three were another treat. This little boy (5) came up to me and told me since there wasn’t any food at my house for them to eat, the fruit from the kumquat tree would be their food. He told me this in such ernst that I asked his maw maw if he was hungry. Turns out, he loves to eat. He was so serious about the tree being his food. You just never know what their little imaginations are going to come up with.

IMG_2919

I am taking advantage of the opportunity to socialize Calypso and Ryka when the kids come over. Ryka is good and I let her run around and I normally put Calypso on a leash. Turns out, this time I should have done the opposite. Calypso stood so still while the little ones (who stand face level with her) petted and loved her.

I wasn’t paying too much attention to Ryka because I was so surprised at how well Calypso was behaving (she’s the wild child) until I heard a scream (not a bad scream). I turned around and Ryka was trying to nuzzle and kiss one of the little girls and she had knocked her down. The little sweetheart was not hurt and wasn’t afraid that Ryka had been a little playful with her. I love to see children when they are not afraid of dogs and want to love them. My dogs, being shepherds, love the kids. It will take a little while until they learn to be more gentle. They were really good and seemed to have remembered some of their manners because it’s been a month since the children were over and they were much calmer than I anticipated.

I am a very organized person – just ask anyone. When someone needs organizing, my name usually comes up in conversations! I came across a book a short time ago quite by accident. It is a book I highly recommend and now that I am writing this, I guess I should also write a book review on it. The name of the book is the life-changing magic of tidying up, the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing by Marie Kondo.

I have read way more organizing books than anyone ever need read and this book, to me, is revolutionary. It offers something that no other book has offered. When we organize, we tend to get rid of a good bit of items, and then we organize what is left – still retaining way too much stuff; stuff that doesn’t bring joy into our lives. The KonMari Method offers a different strategy. Her method of decluttering has you pulling all of your clothes from the closet, drawers, bins, etc. and placing it all on the floor around you. She repeats this process with other items using categories.

The idea behind her decluttering method is to keep only those items that bring you joy. The process may be difficult in the beginning – as a blouse had to be pried out of my hands even though I felt no joy when I held it, but long before the end, you find yourself filling up with joy over the items you have chosen to keep.

I will explain the clothing option. As you pick up each article of clothing, you will find that either it brings you joy or it doesn’t. The item may have brought joy to you when you first purchased it, but if you no longer wear it or the size is wrong, then you’ll find that it doesn’t have that same feeling. This means it no longer brings joy into your life – out it goes. Let that blouse or scarf bring joy to someone else.

I love white and pastels and yet, I find myself buying an odd color or just something with color in hopes of a little change. Then, it sits there in the closet and when I look at it, I feel remorse. I should have just purchased another white shirt! (laughing at myself) I passed these items along to someone who loves the color. What a load off of my shoulders! There were other items that brought joy into my life along the way, but I no longer reached for them, but past them in favor of other shirts or slacks or jackets. I felt joy when I folded them and placed them in my donate pile. More load off!

The hangars have a little more room to move on the rod and my closet is actually a little brighter due to less items on the shelves. I kept only the items that I actually wear and that bring me joy.

I began applying this technique to my bookshelves. Although I donated at least 100 books or more to a local school last year, there are still more that I have been hanging onto. I sat down and thumbed through each of my baking and cooking books. With arthritis in my hands, I am no longer able to do the cookie and cake decorating that I once enjoyed, so I pulled those books out that had once given me so much joy and passed them along to a good friend who’s life they will bring joy into. She was excited to received them and I felt joy on both ends – divesting myself of so many books and giving them to someone who will love them as much as I did. I cleaned out four feet of bookshelf space! I’ll be working on other sections this week and next.

This friend and her youngest daughter enjoy having tea parties so I gifted them a set of cups and saucers and while I was visiting, we had a tea party. I was also lucky enough to be there when her older daughter was cooking pancakes. I couldn’t help but give her a few pointers that it took me years to hone – especially since she was making chocolate chip pancakes! We dubbed her the Pancake Queen, a title she loves! She has decided that she will make every kind of pancake that she can think of now that she has perfected the pancake flip.

IMG_2916

I spent a little time straightening up my desk this week. The top of my desk is the only messy place in the house. Haven’t figured out why except that I tend to procrastinate with some things. Please don’t let my secret out of the bag!

IMG_2920

Hubby has fussed at Ryka and Calypso so many times for chasing the chickens, including one time when Calypso pouted in her house for two hours (he finally had to go and coax her out). I looked out the back door a couple of days ago and they had taken up residence outside of the chicken coop. All seemed well and they seemed to be content just observing the chickens. Well, one decided to go to the water bucket, which is attached to the inside corner of the coop to keep it from bring spilled, and Ryka jumped up to chase with Calypso not far behind.

That is all it took for Hubby to fuss at them again. They came running to the house and I told them to “go around” which either means go around to the back of the house or go around to the front of the house. They are so funny when they take off. They are always waiting by the time I make it through the house to the other door. I let them come on the porch where they love to sit at the front door and watch me inside. At least it keeps them out of trouble for a while!

They eventually lay down for a nap and I couldn’t resist taking a couple of photos of them. The door is full of nose prints as they spend a lot of time there with their noses pressed to the glass.

IMG_2913

Now, I ask you – does that look like two dogs who would chase chickens? They are so sweet and sound asleep!

We are Catholic and we attended Holy Thursday’s Last Supper Mass. Hubby is part of the music ministry (that’s him to the right). On Friday, we attended the Way of the Cross in the morning and in the afternoon, the Seven Last Words of Jesus and the Benediction. It was a great remembrance of what Jesus went through and a time to reflect.

IMG_2915

We attended the Easter Vigil on Saturday night. We witnessed two Baptisms and eight Confirmations done by the Bishop.

Sunday was Easter and we enjoyed a peaceful day. Hubby and I prepared a Barbque and fixings for dinner Sunday night, which we enjoyed with family, and our two parish priests. Father John is so darn funny! We were discussing all the different meats involved in our meal and he dubbed it “Bar-b-que gone wild!”  We had beef, deer, and pork meat in the beans and burgers, turkey sausage, chicken, hot dogs, and shrimp kabobs.

That concludes my week. I hope you had an enjoyable week and a Happy Easter.

Her father stared back at her, his eyes dark and unreadable. “Why are you here, Sara?”

“I wanted to be here for your birthday. It’s been a long time since we’ve shared more than an email. We should talk, catch up with each other.”

“Why on earth would you want to talk to me?”

The confusion in his eyes made her realize just how far apart they’d drifted. “Because you’re my father. You’re my family. We’re the only ones left.”

“Do you need money?”

“This isn’t about money. Mom would not have wanted us to end up like strangers. We need to improve our relationship.”

He stared back at her for a long moment, then said, “There’s nothing left for you here, Sara. I wish you well, but we both need to move on. If you stay, it won’t go well. We’ll only disappoint each other.”

Her chest tightened, the finality of his words bringing pain as well as anger. Her father was like a brick wall. She kept throwing herself at him, trying to break through his resistance, but all she ever achieved was a new batch of emotional bruises.

“You’re a grown woman now,” he added. “You don’t need a father.”

“Not that I ever really had one,” she countered, surprising herself a little with the words. She was used to holding her tongue when it came to her dad, because talking usually made things worse.

“I did my best.”

“Did you?”

A tickle caught at her throat and her eyes blurred with unwanted tears. She had not come here to cry. She sniffed, wondering why the air felt so thick. It took a minute to register that it was not her emotions that were making her eyes water, but smoke.

The same awareness flashed in her father’s eyes. “Damn,” he swore. “The kitchen—I was cooking—”

He ran out of the room, and she followed him down the stairs, shocked by how thick the smoke was in the entry.

She was on her dad’s heels when he entered the kitchen. The scene was unbelievable. Flames shot two feet in the air off a sizzling pot on the stove. The fire had found more fuel in a stack of newspapers on the counter that had been left too close to the burner, those sparks leaping to the nearby curtains.

Her father grabbed a towel and tried to beat out some of the flames, but his efforts only seemed to make things worse. Embers flew everywhere, finding new places to burn, the heat growing more and more intense. Moving to the sink, she turned on the faucet and filled up a pitcher, but it was taking too long to get enough water. She threw some of it at the fire, but it made no difference.

“Move aside,” her dad shouted, grabbing two hot pads.

“What are you doing?” she asked in confusion.

He tried to grab the pot and move it to the sink, but she was in the way, and he stumbled, dropping the pot in the garbage. She jumped back from an explosion of new fire.

“We have to call 911,” she said frantically. But there was no phone in the kitchen, and her cell phone was in her bag by the entry. “Let’s get out of here.”

Her father was still trying to put out the fire, but he was getting nowhere.

“Dad, please.”

“Get out, Sara,” he said forcefully, then ran into the adjacent laundry room.

“Wait! Where are you going?”

“I have to get something important,” he yelled back at her.

“Dad. We need to get out of the house.” She coughed out the words, but she might as well have remained silent because her dad had vanished through the laundry room and down the back stairs to the basement. She couldn’t imagine what he had to get. There was nothing but gardening tools and cleaning supplies down there.

She started to follow him, then jumped back as the fire caught the wallpaper next to her head, sizzling and leaping towards her clothing.

“Dad,” she screamed. “We need to get out of the house.”

A crash echoed through the house. Then all she could hear was the crackling of the fire.

Sara ran through the flames and down the stairs into the basement. A single light bulb dangled from a wire over the stairs, showing her father in a crumpled heap on the cement floor.

She dropped to her knees next to his still body. He was unconscious, blood under his head, and his right leg was twisted in an odd position. She put a hand on his chest. His heart was still beating.

“Dad,” she said. “Wake up.”

He blinked groggily. “Sara?” he asked in confusion. “What are you doing here?”

“The kitchen is on fire. We need to get out of the house.” A glance back over her shoulder revealed smoke pouring through the open door at the top of the stairs. There was no way out of the basement without going through the kitchen.

Her father tried to sit up, but quickly fell back, groaning with pain. “My leg is broken. You go.”

“I can’t leave you here. That’s not an option.”

“You can’t carry me. Go. Get help.”

“I’ll be right back,” she promised.

She ran up the stairs, shocked and terrified when she saw how much worse the fire had gotten in literally minutes. The heat was intense. She could barely breathe, and there was a wall of flames between her and the only way out. She couldn’t afford to be scared. Grabbing a towel off the top of the nearby washing machine, she covered her nose and mouth, and prepared to make a dash for it.

Before she could move, a figure appeared on the other side of the flames—a man.

A wave of relief swept through her. Help had arrived.

He barreled through the fire and smoke, batting away the flames as if they were troublesome bees. When he stopped in front of her, her heart jumped again.

Aiden?” She lowered the towel from her face. He was the last Callaway she wanted to see.

My Review – Stay tuned!

Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers.

So, why the new pen name?

As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance. However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with. That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.

Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage. The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.

I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates. Sign up to receive my newsletter for updates and news!

Author Catherine Bennett

I grew up in Ohio where I currently live with my husband and our two rescue Labradors. Some of my favorite things include reading, shopping, pepperoni pizza, Hershey bars and hanging out with my two grown sons. I also love dogs; so going to the dog park is cheap entertainment for my husband and I!

Growing up an only child, I had many imaginary friends. I believe this – and a love of books – fueled my desire to write. It was many years later that my dream of becoming a published author came true.

I’m grateful to God for always keeping a story in my heart and hope you are blessed and entertained by my book.

Excerpt –

He looked up at the menu board.  “I’ll take a Grande.  Black, please.”

Chuckling, she thought about how impressed her dad would be with this guy.  He considered anyone who drank coffee black in the same category as his favorite actor, John Wayne.  She poured the coffee, and rang up his order.

“That’s two-dollars and fifty cents.”  He handed her his debit card, which she swiped.

He took the cup.  “Thanks.  Have a good one.”

“Yeah, you too.”

He walked over to one of the upholstered chairs and sank down into its well-used seat.  The shop owner had talked of replacing the pair of relics with some sturdy, leather ones.  Leather would flatter this guy much better than the faded paisley print on the old ones.  Devon glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.  Yes, leather was definitely his style, but not the biker stuff.  No, he’d look best in a rugged, mahogany leather jacket instead of the puffy, gray parka he wore.

The Party Plan by Melanie Jayne – Interview

The Party Plan Cover

Melanie Jayne Headshot

INTERVIEW

How did you come up with the idea for your story?

The Party Plan started as a 3,500 word short story that I submitted to an Open Call for an anthology. It was rejected but I liked Avery and Kade so much that I decided to expand their story. I have always been intrigued by missed opportunities and the “what ifs” in life. I thought I would give two people the chance to explore their long held feelings. By the way, I do have two godsons that are named Brian and Kyle but the resemblance to the characters ends there.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I have always been the person that people tell their stories and problems to. I mean the lady that sits by me on a plane will spill her guts to me. Since I am older, many of my friends have been through a divorce or the end of a long-term relationship. I have watched them regroup and move on. I am a huge believer in that you must keep moving forward, don’t live in the past and you simply must learn from your mistakes.

Is there anything that you find particularly challenging in your writing?

How much time do we have? I am still very new to all of this and my work schedule recently changed so I’m still getting used to that. I am a slow writer, who needs to ease into my groove so I waste a lot of time getting into writing mode. I am also terrible with commas. I either use too many or not enough. I can talk myself into adding a comma to almost any sentence. I know my editor probably was ready to kill me.

What are your current projects?

I have a novella called A Change for the Good that is in the editing process. I hope to have it published at the end of June. I’m writing book one of a small town romance trilogy. It has two very stubborn characters, who have a second chance at love. It is called You Only and I hope to have that out in early winter. Then there will be a novella based in the Casino world. When I get all of that taken care of, I’m starting a story that has been hounding me for months. It is a paranormal tale about Lycans, however, these aren’t your mama’s werewolves. It is much darker than anything I have ever attempted and deeper because I will have to world build. I’m going to change up some established rules regarding the Lycans. Wish me luck because reading that list makes me feel anxious.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Absolutely. Don’t let your past dictate your future. If you are unhappy then make changes. Stop making the same mistakes over and over. Change your decisions, then you will change your life.

Does music play any type of role in your writing?

YES. I create a playlist for every story. I am constantly finding and adding songs. For The Party Plan, I listened to the songs, Glitter in the Air and Colorblind often. For the sex scenes, I always start with Nine Inch Nails’ Closer.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your life?

About two years ago, I learned that my best friend’s marriage was ending. They had been married for 23 years, have four great kids, a lovely home and a dog. From the outside it seemed like a great life but there were problems. I admire her so much for how she handled everything. She has since moved from Chicago to L.A. so that the girls, who are teenagers, can be closer to their dad, plus she found an even better job. I hope that when she is ready that she will be able to find love again or at least have fun looking. I made her promise to share all of the details.

What books influenced your life most?

I read the book Scruples when I was fifteen, I found it hidden in my mom’s closet so I knew it had to be good. Oh wow- it had billionaires, fashion, and hot sex. I then went through a British Mystery period. I love Patricia Wentworth’s Miss Silver, Dorothy Sayers’ Lord Peter Wimsey and Agatha Christie. More recently, I’ve re-read Welcome to Temptation and Faking It by Jennifer Crusie, I could relate to the small town and the characters. After reading several books in Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series, I knew that I wanted to write about real people and real situations that I could relate to.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I have not read as much as I used to. I will tell you about two authors that I fell in love with over the last year. I am obsessed with Kit Rocha’s Beyond Series. I read the first book, Beyond Shame and when I finished, I called my friend Val, and told her to stop whatever she was doing and read that book. I then started to read it all over again. The world building is amazing and easy to follow. Even though there are many characters, the way they are written, you remember them and care about them. I met one part of this writing duo at RT2014 and had a total fangirl moment that included jumping up and down and shouting “O’Kane for Life”. I also read the Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle. Horror/New Adult isn’t something that I generally read but a trusted friend suggested it so I tried it. Ms. Halle can set a scene so that you can feel the cold rain hitting your face or the cold on a snowy morning. Plus Dex, the hero is so complex, damaged, crazy, cranky and wild. I was charmed by him and at times equally frustrated, but I never stopped reading. I will also tell you that two of her scenes still freak me the hell out – even today in the daylight. I will never rent a cabin in a snowy, mountainous area nor will I ever be able to sit on a deserted beach and look out at the surf without thinking about coffins washing ashore. A shiver just went down my spine thinking about it.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I want to say that if you love a book, tell your friends, talk about it on social media, and post a positive review. Send a message to the author to tell them how much you liked the book and why.   Share your love of reading and the books that you find special. I will also add that for years I have heard that writing can be a very lonely vocation. It is true, so a positive message really can brighten an author’s day.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?

You can find my author page on Facebook- Melanie Jayne, Author. I’m MJSmut on twitter. My website is www.ReadMelanieJayne.com. Maybe we can meet up at the following events that I am planning on attending, RT2015 in Dallas, Lori Foster’s RAGT in June, RWA in NYC, and AAD in Hotlanta in August for my Birthday. If you are feeling adventurous and aren’t upset by a monster dog and her slobber, then come by my house for a visit.

Do you have a special time to write?

How is your day structured writing-wise. I am trying to become more structured. I work 5 overnights a week at a casino and I need my sleep. Without it, I am a zombie. I am trying to program my brain and my life so that I can write 1-2 hours in the late afternoon after I wake up. On weekends, I try to put in three hours each morning. I am not a fast writer and I need time to get into my writerly groove. I’m working on getting my groove on much faster.

Why did you choose to write Erotic Romance?

It’s what I like to read. I like sex. I like to talk about it, hear about it and think about it. It just seemed to be a natural extension that I write books with explicit sex in them.

What is for you the perfect book hero?

For me, this is a very hard question. So I am going to tell you about my current favorite. I am so in love with Dallas and Lex, the King and Queen of Sector 4, from Kit Rocha’s Beyond series. I feel that I have to name them both because they are a package deal. Dallas is brave, intelligent, and he learns from his mistakes. Lex has a huge heart and the brain to back it up. She is a natural leader and her influence makes Dallas a better man. Dallas takes care of business behind a desk and in the ring fighting, and if necessary Lex won’t think twice about cutting your throat. Plus they are both sexy and extremely sexual.

If you start a book, do you already have the whole story in your head or is it built progressively?

I am a Plotter. Usually the entire story comes to me at one time. I then make an extensive outline, a list of character attributes, and a list describing the location including the town name, what their homes may look like. I cut out pages from magazines so that I can dress the characters, I even have bedroom decorating ideas. I also have phrases or bits of conversations that come to me that I jot down and save. For instance, a woman at work told me that she “can never get rid of old boyfriends because she has a magic vagina”. I wrote that down immediately and I know the perfect scene for it.

When and why did you begin writing?

I have always made up stories, I did it to help me fall asleep or to pass the time. I tried to write a book when I was a teen but soon gave up. In college, I was really excited to take a creative writing class. The professor hated my work. She gave me C’s and D’s. I was shocked and hurt by those grades so I put that dream away. About five years ago, I was complaining to my good friend, Valerie Cozart, about not connecting with anything I was reading. She suggested that I try to write. Boom-the pieces fell into place. I organized some ideas and shopped them to my friends to get feedback, I started attending conventions and going to panels on craft. I attended the Writer’s Bootcamp at RT2013and took a few online courses. I read books about writing and I started reading with a critical eye towards the craft. I also asked questions and listened to writers talk. It was in June of 2013 that I started to write seriously. I felt so free when I was typing away. I would laugh out loud or get teary eyed as I put those words on the screen. It is an amazing feeling.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

It hit me last May when, I was sitting on the bed in my hotel room at RT in New Orleans. I had just hired an editor to work on The Party Plan. When I sent her the manuscript, it became a reality, I was going to do this. I wasn’t going to put that manuscript away because I was afraid of rejection, I was going to get it published and share that book with the world. Then I was going to do it again and again. I was excited but I was also scared shitless, however I felt so alive.

List three books that you have recently read and would recommend.

I haven’t been reading much recently. I did read The Prisoner by Skye Warren and Annika Martin. This book has haunted me, especially the power shift when he breaks her glasses. I need my glasses to see so the violent intent behind that action really hit me. Beyond Addiction by Kit Rocha. I am obsessed with this series. I love Finn, the bad boy that works to become a better man for the woman he loves. I am and always will be O’Kane for Life. A few weeks ago, I needed the comfort of my book friends so I re-read, Rock Chick Reckoning by Kristen Ashley. I love Mase and Stella’s story, he is a badass P.I. and she is a local rock star. I think one of the most romantic scenes that I have ever read is when Stella is singing Pearl Jam’s song, Black, and Mase climbs onto the stage and kisses her. That song means so much to me and the scene is so powerful, it gets to me every time.

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do.

I am a klutz. I run into things constantly and I am always bruised. When music plays the klutziness magically goes away and I can move. At one time in my life, I achieved some success as a competitor in Pro/Am Ballroom dancing. I think it was mostly due to my partner who was a Viking and so bossy- just like a character in a book. Still to this day when a good song comes on, I can move in 3” heels, two sets of fake eyelashes and a ballgown laden with stones that weighs a ton.

Will you write more about these characters?

I can’t say ever, but at this time, I don’t have anything in mind for Kade and Avery.

STEALING ROSE (The Fowler Sisters #2) by Monica Murphy

Blurb:

People say the youngest child has it easy, but nothing can be further from the truth. Unlike my two sisters, Violet and Lily, I’m never in the limelight. I just work my butt off for Fleur Cosmetics and get little to no thanks for it. I’ve been pushed too far one too many times, and I’m finally brave enough to do something about it.

Maybe my newfound courage has something to do with the amazing pink and white diamond necklace I wear to the party in Cannes. The instant those dazzling heirloom jewels touch my skin, they excite some deep, aching need inside. And when that guy—that totally gorgeous guy—locks eyes with me, I know this nice girl is going to be naughty.

For once it’s my turn. My turn to say no to my father, to outshine my sisters, to walk away from it all—straight into the arms of a mysterious stranger. But what if Caden is much more than I bargained for? Sure, he makes me feel sexy and free in a way I never have before, but there’s something else I can’t quite place—something dangerous. Maybe our “chance” meeting wasn’t so random. Maybe he was looking for me for a reason. Whatever his motive, there’s no going back now.

And maybe I don’t want to.

EXCERPT:

I sit on the edge of the mattress, not about to give up. I need to get closer to her and eventually get closer to that damn neck- lace she wore. Dexter wants it. He’s been hounding my ass for it. And I’ll get it.

Eventually.

I’d rather focus on her first. Earn her trust. So I’m not casing out her hotel room. I’m not looking for any stray jewelry lying around.

Hell, I’m in too deep now.

I’m here with Rose because I want to be, not because I want to steal something from her.

Yet. Don’t forget the “yet” part at the end of that last thought.

Yeah. Who wants to focus on trying to steal a necklace when I could be sliding back into bed with her? I want to feel the hot, tight clasp of her pussy milking my cock again. I want to feel her touch me, feel her lips on my skin, hear her moan when I hit a spot that feels particularly good. I want to learn all of those spots, memorize them for later. Because there will be a later for Rose and me. I plan on that. And she’d better plan on it too, no matter how much in denial she is.

“Rose.” She turns to look at me, her expression wary. Guarded. I know the feeling. More than anything, I know that look. I’ve been wearing the same guarded expression pretty much all my life. I trust no one. They’re all out to screw me over; it doesn’t matter who they are. I’ve become so good at playing the part, of being whoever I need to be at any given moment, I have no idea who the real me is anymore.

Being with Rose is the closest I’ve felt to myself since I don’t know when. I want to explore this. Explore what we share, what she makes me feel, what we are when we’re together.

She’s ready to kick me out and I’m ready to cling. Talk about a total role reversal. I need to get my head back on straight and focus.

“Caden.” She matches my tone, watching me expectantly. When I don’t say anything she rolls her eyes. “Do you realize I don’t even know your last name? What does that say about me, that I’d let you into my room and—fool around with you for hours and I don’t know your last name? It’s appalling behavior.”

“Appalling behavior? You sound like a crabby old school- teacher.” I want to laugh but I don’t. She’s dead serious. I think she’s just shocked herself with what we’ve done.

I’ve shocked myself too, but in a good way. While she acts like we’ve committed the ultimate sin.

“You wouldn’t understand.” She averts her head as if it pains her to look at me and I move closer to her, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear.

“It’s Kingsley,” I murmur, wishing I could kiss her. Comfort her. But that’s not happening, not yet. I’ve got to take it slow.

She turns, a little gasp escaping her when she discovers how close I am. “What?”

“My last name. It’s Kingsley.”

“Are you serious? Of course it is.” She tosses her hands up in the air, making her breasts jiggle, and I jerk my gaze away from her chest.

Brandon looked over at her neutral expression. Whatever kind of relationship she had with Michael Turner didn’t seem to be making her happy. At that moment, all he wanted to do was to make her forget all about the jerk.

As if sensing him watching her, Devon turned her head enough to make eye contact with him. The faint, milky glow from the streetlight showed enough of her features for him to see a soft blush warm her cheeks. Under her dark lashes, he watched her sea green eyes glint invitingly as her soft lips turned up at the corners. In that moment, his resolve to keep the date on a friendly level came crashing down.

First Chapter:

Olivia Lewis woke up in a Sin City penthouse amidst petal-strewn, silk sheets. She bolted upright in bed…and groaned, wavering as the world turned. And turned again.

Okay, make that silk sheets, rose petals…and the most vicious hangover of her life.

Hissing, she pressed a hand over her eyes, the other on her head to stop the contents from sloshing around. Her mouth felt like sandpaper, and her stomach writhed. Obviously the obscene amount of liquor she’d consumed the night before was turning on her in sickly rebellion.

“Oh, holy moly,” she wheezed. “What the hell happened last night?” Peering around, she squinted against the desert sunlight streaming through the undraped floor-to-ceiling window that spanned the entire left wall of the bedroom. At the sight of several curiously unmentionable items scattered across the bed and floor, she became more than a little curious about the events of the previous evening. Especially when she saw the tattered remains of her red dress hooked on the wall sconce at the other end of the room.

Frowning, she lifted the covers and looked underneath. She was naked as sin. And she’d spent enough nights with men to know how she should feel the next day. With a groan, she laid back into the pillows and pulled the covers over her head.

So sometime during the night, she had snuck away from the bachelorette party for her friend Roxie Honeycutt and gotten frisky—very frisky—with an unknown man.

It wasn’t her first one-night stand. Nor did she think it would be her last. But considering she’d been the hostess of Roxie’s bachelorette party and it had been her idea to bring the bash to Vegas, Olivia felt shame rushing up to meet her.

She sighed, flopping her arms over her head. “Well done, Liv,” she muttered at the ceiling. It was painted with a mural complete with puffy white clouds and baby-faced cherubs.

How many inappropriate things had those cherubs seen last night?

Olivia pursed her lips, thinking back hard to what she could remember of the past twenty-four hours. She and her friends had flown into Vegas, then checked into their casino hotel room. They’d gone to a bar…no, a club. The venue had been packed elbow to elbow. Olivia’s other friend and invitee, Adrian Carlton, had kept ordering drinks for the three of them. Tequila shots. That would explain the gargantuan headache pounding away at the inside of Olivia’s head and the base of her neck.

Then…there’d been dancing on the parquet dance floor. And a man. Olivia braved the thumping, eyes watering as she thought hard to bring him into sharper focus. She got only an impression—tall. Tailored suit. A black necktie, which she’d had fun unknotting later here in the penthouse…with her teeth?

Rebecca Jordan’s life is simple, disciplined, and uncomplicated, at least on the surface. Then she meets a handsome stranger/secret admirer named Michael Vale one fateful late night at a bookstore café. As a focused but struggling photographer with a passion for art, her outwardly happy world is turned upside down during this life-changing encounter when she quickly realizes she has met her soul mate. The undeniable attraction between them and their intense, immediate connection seem picture perfect as they discuss the shop’s local artwork, until Rebecca abruptly ends the chance meeting with no explanation.

Betraying Brett, her loyal, loving boyfriend, is something Rebecca can never bring herself to do. Driven by a strong moral code and molded by divorced parents and a tumultuous childhood, she struggles to stay away from Michael, but fate and circumstance intervene, bringing them back together time and time again. As much as she resists, there is no denying her true feelings for him and the simple fact that Michael understands her in a way Brett never has. Michael proves to be everything she’s ever wanted, but remains just out of her reach.

Behind the Glass tells the story of Michael and Rebecca’s extraordinary love and the many unconventional stages their relationship must go through. Their morals and their faith in true love and in each other will be put to the test as they learn that meeting one’s soul mate does not come without obstacles.

My Thoughts:

The cover to Behind the Glass is quite striking and once I began reading the book, I realized that it was a painting, which was fitting for the book and most appropriate.

I enjoyed the story, but there was something that took me a little while to put my finger on. The book was very emotionally detailed in the writing and allowed me little room for exercising my imagination. The writing was too perfect. Each emotion was described in such detail that I tended to lose track of what I was reading. I found that I didn’t care for this particular style of writing.

The ending of the story was predictable, but most books are and this wasn’t a problem for me. The story line is sugary and sweet with emotional turmoil thrown in throughout the book. I think that people who enjoy a good, predictable, sweet romance will love this book.

I have read a lot of books, but this is the first of its kind for me and I am a little unsure as how to rate it. Each individual sentence was a perfect sentence in its own right, but the story was too detailed for me. I enjoy exercising my imagination and this book didn’t allow me to do that. The story was there, although lost in the detail, so I am going to give the book 4 stars.

What happened in Vegas…followed her home!

Olivia Lewis is not the marrying type. So when a wild weekend in Vegas leaves her with a surprise husband, she’s happy to sign anything to erase her mistake—even if that mistake is handsome, charming and comes with an English accent. Fortunately, her groom has other plans.

Bestselling author Gerald Leighton knows he can make his new bride fall in love with him—he just needs time. In exchange for a quickie divorce, Olivia grudgingly gives him a few weeks to attempt to woo her. And whether Olivia likes it or not, Gerald plans on using every second to win her heart!

Book Excerpt:

Before Olivia could shoulder her way through the door, it opened quickly. She felt herself pitch over, tripping over the edge of the bedsheet. Cursing, she fell against the lean, chiseled chest of the man on the other side of the bathroom doorjamb.

She heard his surprised whoosh just before his arms snagged her under the shoulders and curled around her to keep her from falling at his feet. Her cheek pressed tight against his sternum. He was so warm. The deep timbre of a chuckle trebled beneath the ear pressed to his chest and words, rough around the edges, came floating from his mouth. “Ah, she wakes.”

When she tried to pull herself back, he held her fast to him for a moment longer to make sure she had her footing. With a murmured, “Easy there, love,” he released her and she stepped away, seeking his face.

He was smiling. The soft expression was tense around the edges, probably from what she could guess was a good deal of pounding happening on the inside of his head, too. She drew in a breath. His eyes were a brilliant shade of green. Dimples, or laugh lines, dug in around his mouth and the corners of his eyes. A man who smiled often and laughed well, Olivia surmised. His hair was blond and wet from a shower she assumed, judging by the steam behind him. He’d combed the hair back from his forehead, leaving his high brow bare.

A towel hung loosely around his waist. She blinked. She was staring. But the longer she stared, the more she could remember from last night, and the giddy spontaneity and blistering heat of all that had transpired made her forget for a moment how miserable she felt.

And, bless him, he didn’t seem to mind the staring. He was doing a good bit of his own. The smile on his lips deepened into a full-fledged grin, eyes softening further as he took her in. “Well. Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes.”

She found a smile curving at the corner of her mouth. He was British. His words were enunciated with the high-class sounds of English breeding and good humor. His voice was like fine-aged wine. Or whiskey.

Whiskey, she decided. It had a good, old-fashioned burn to it.

Lifting her hands to the sheet knotted just under her collarbone, she made sure it was in place before dragging a hand back through her long, curly, bedraggled tresses. “Erm…good morning?” Olivia said, unsure of herself. Usually, she knew how to navigate the awkward, morning-after interlude. But this stranger’s clean-cut, unexpected appeal threw her for a loop.

He beamed and held out a hand, skimming far and above the awkwardness of the situation with good-natured ease. “Gerald Leighton. It’s lovely to meet you…again.”

Trigger by Julia Derek (Book Review – 3 stars)

Sparks fly when struggling actress Nina Tyler meets hot lawyer Dylan Whitman. The chemistry between them is so intense Nina even rethinks her staunch position on relationships. Maybe they’re not a waste of time after all. But there’s something about Dylan that scares her—and she knows it has nothing to do with fear of getting close to a man, like her best friend thinks. It’s something far worse.

Preppy Dylan has had his heart broken and his uncle challenges him to move on by going on five online dates. Dylan ends up on a date with Nina. While her unabashed attitude unsettles him at first, he soon realizes that he really likes her. But as they get closer, she pulls back. It’s as if she’s convinced he’d physically hurt her, which he’d never do. Still, if he doesn’t figure out what’s triggering her fear, she’ll never be his. Little does he know her fear is directly tied to him.

Julia Derek grew up in SImage of Julia Derekweden but always knew she was meant to live in America, more specifically, in New York City. My Thoughts:

The following review contains what may be considered a spoiler. Please keep this in mind as you read my review. Thank you.

After reading the book, I felt the title, “TRIGGER“, was an apt name. The book dealt with trigger memories from a prior bullying experience. As this is a topic we are seeing a lot about in the news today, I felt the author touched on a relevant subject for her book.

TRIGGER by Julia Derek is the story of a young woman who finds herself dealing, or in the beginning, not dealing with the after effects of high school bullying as well as survivor’s guilt. She becomes involved with a guy and finds herself having strange reactions to the different facial expressions he uses. Through therapy, she is able to begin addressing her delayed reactions. Another twist in the story has one of the bullies in close proximity.

I thought some of the book meandered. Then, all of a sudden the story came to a conclusion and closed up shop fairly quickly. I am not a fan of sudden endings. I feel that books need to focus as much attention on setting up the endings as the beginnings, and I felt this book was lacking in that respect.

The plus side is that the story topic was good, but I felt the actual writing was more on a 3-3.5 level. Something in the writing just didn’t resonate with what I look for in a book. It was almost as though I were reading a book that fluctuated between several grade levels.

I did enjoy the point of view change with each chapter. The author pulled that aspect off quiet well. There are also a number of detailed sex scenes in the book.

I am going to give the book an overall 3 star rating. The book enveloped a good topic with good character development, even though I felt the writing needs some improvement.

Author: Noelle Adams
Release Date: 9/9/2014

Synopsis:

For the last eight months, Mandy has lived across the hall from a caveman.

He won’t trim his beard, he mostly talks in grunts, and he’ll hardly emerge from his cave of an apartment. Ben might be a grumpy mess, but she kind of likes him anyway. Get to Know Noelle Adams:

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

I’ve had the idea for this book for three years now, since I plotted out the entire Heirs of Damon series all at once. I can’t exactly remember how I came up with the idea, except I know I wanted the contrast between Ben, with his full beard and grumpy attitude, and Mandy, with her perfect appearance and cheerful disposition.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I most often get inspired by random things in my life. For instance, I was inspired for one scene in Stripping the Billionaire when I was sitting in church and thinking that Benjamin’s mother would definitely go to church. I’m also often inspired by other stories (books, television, movies, etc.). It’s usually one little thing that ends up launching the story. For instance, I got the idea for A Negotiated Marriage after watching a scene in a TV show that had a woman rushing around, late for work and wearing very high heels. The show had nothing to do with a marriage-of-convenience, but for some reason, that scene inspired me for Molly. It’s usually a little, random thing, and then the story grows out of it.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

There’s a frustration I often feel when I have so many stories I want to tell but not enough time in which to write them. That sometimes make me feel very anxious—like I’ll never catch up to my inspiration—which distracts me from writing at all. I will also often get inspired for future stories when I’m in the middle of writing a current one. That makes me want to jump around and makes it hard to focus on a current project.

Stripping teaser 2

Excerpt:

“Oh, no,” he said, starting to his feet. “You’re not touching my beard.”
“But you’ll look so much better if you’ll let me neaten it up a bit.”
“I’m not trying to look good.”
She rolled her eyes but didn’t look surprised. “Anyway, I wasn’t thinking about your beard. Right now, I’m after the back of your neck.”
“What’s wrong with the back of my neck?”
“It’s a mess. When was the last time you got your hair cut?”
“I don’t know. I don’t fuss around with things like that.”
“Well, it bugs me, so sit still.”
He stiffened and watched her suspiciously as she walked around behind him.
“I’m not going to touch your big, ugly beard. I promise.”
He rolled his eyes but didn’t object when she started to run the trimmer along the back of his neck.
“Are you sure you want to do this at the dining room table?”
“Better here than on one of my rugs.”
He felt uncomfortable as she worked on him, conscious of her body behind him. When he felt the trimmer come toward his jaw, he muttered, “Don’t get carried away.”
“Relax.” She turned the trimmer off and leaned over to blow the hair off his neck.
The sensation made Ben tense up.
He gave himself a firm mental lecture. He was not—not—going to get turned on by Mandy. He’d done really well about resisting that particular temptation over the last several months, and he wasn’t going to give into it this evening.
“Oh, Ben, you’re a mess,” she murmured. She ran her fingers through his hair, rubbing his scalp in a way that felt incredibly good. “You’re not going to get any action if you’re such a gorilla.”
“I’ll have you know I get plenty of action, and so far I’ve had no complaints.”
He actually didn’t have much a social life, but that was by choice and not because he was incapable of picking up a woman.
He did wish, however, that Mandy hadn’t brought up the idea of sex.
“Yeah, but it might give a woman pause. I mean, how many are going to want to get a kiss from a gorilla?” She moved around to the side of his chair and peered at him. He was pretty sure she was assessing how much damage she was capable of doing to his beard, but her neckline was directly at his eye-level, and the wide neck of her sweater was slipping off one of her shoulders.
He stared at the graceful line from her neck to her shoulder—smooth skin, deep curve, faint shadow—and then he swallowed as her beautiful hair slipped over her shoulder to fall forward as she leaned toward him to ruffle his hair.
He managed to say, “Kissing me is not like kissing a gorilla.”
“Okay. If you say so. Please can I give you just a little trim?” she asked. She was giving him a beseeching look, with a back-note of teasing in her expression.
“No.”
He didn’t actually care if his hair was trimmed, only he thought it was wiser for her not to be standing so close to him for so long. His body was starting to react to the slipping of her neckline, the flash of full cleavage, and the smell of her drifting over toward him as she moved.
“It will look so much better? I bet you’d even be good-looking if we can just get rid of some of this hair.”
“Being good-looking is very far down on my priority list.”
She laughed and started to massage his scalp again, moving her hands down toward his neck. It felt so good as her fingers pressed hard that he heard himself make a soft moan.
“You’re all tense,” she said, kneading his neck. “A massage now and then would be good for you. So would a haircut.”
He raised his hands to hold onto the table so he didn’t do something incredibly stupid like turning around and grabbing her. She was just being friendly. Neighborly. She was on this search for family-feelings, and right now she was focusing them on him.
But she wasn’t attracted to him—she’d told him over and over again that he wasn’t good-looking the way he was. And sex was the last thing on her mind right now.
Besides, he couldn’t offer her anything more than sex, and she deserved so much more.
So he gripped the table as she moved down to his shoulders. His breathing was getting ragged as his muscles started to soften.
And other things started to harden.

Excerpt:

“What are you staring at, Cupcake?” he muttered, radiating more tension than ever.

And she was even drawn to his tension. What the hell was happening to her?

She wanted a good-looking, well-dressed man who had things together and was ready to be a husband. None of that was Ben.

To hide her response, she gave him a teasing grin. “Nothing. I’m just wondering if you’re hiding some sort of lost love behind all your grumpy muttering.”

“I’m not hiding any sort of love.” He was frowning, gruff, covered with hair. It was ridiculous that she was attracted to him.

Before she knew what she was doing, she stretched up to press a kiss just on the side of his mouth. His beard was scratchy under her lips but not unpleasant.

She wanted to kiss him again.

She felt his body tighten even more, and his arms jerked strangely.

She stepped back, flushing and horribly embarrassed.

God, she was an idiot. She’d made him uncomfortable, since their friendship had never allowed any sort of kissing.

“What was that for?” he demanded, his eyes searching her face strangely, like he might have suspected she was feeling in ways that were very inappropriate.

The last thing she wanted to do was get in the way of their friendship—one that meant a lot more to her than she’d realized until recently—with some stray, irrational lusts that could never turn into something serious.

So she managed a light grin and said, “That was because you’re pretty cute for a Neanderthal.”

And now his dream seems a little further away. As he fights his way back to the top of the company, he isn’t about to watch another project fall apart just because his ex-girlfriend’s best friend is a loose cannon.

What a Lady CravesWHAT A LADY CRAVES on Goodreads

Ashlyn Macnamara weaves a delicious tale of two souls torn apart by circumstance and reunited by fate—perfect for fans of Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Sabrina Jeffries.

Henrietta Upperton is about to marry Alexander Sanford when he rushes off to India to salvage his family’s fortune. Then comes the devastating news that he has wed another. Eight agonizing years later, a storm washes Alexander ashore—injured, widowed, and hunted—and one glimpse of his ruggedly handsome face reawakens the desire Henrietta thought she had buried deep inside. Her body still yearns for his touch, but she’s determined not let him wound her again . . . not this time.

For Alexander, honor always comes first. But only now does he realize that when given the choice between two virtuous deeds, he picked the wrong one. On the run with his life in tatters and a pair of daughters in tow, Alexander burns for Henrietta. He knows he does not deserve forgiveness. And yet he longs to wrap his arms around her warm body once again. What’s more, he is sure the lady craves the same.

(Chapter Three)

Alexander took a none-too-steady step back from the counter. “I’ll see you to the manor.”

Oh, how she wanted to refuse, but he was clearly in no condition to make it up the hill on his own, and he needed to return to his chamber. To his bed. Otherwise, he was likely to keel over once more and spend the rest of the day on Tilly’s rough and filthy floorboards. She wouldn’t relegate even him to such a fate.

He proffered an elbow, the gesture oddly formal in a derelict shop owned by a scavenger. Ever the gentleman, Alexander. Just as she remembered him.

She closed her eyes against another flurry of memories, ones that had her dressed in silk and him in cravat and black topcoat, dancing, laughing, stealing off to the terrace for a few stealthy kisses. Yes, he’d been all that to her, but he’d also broken her heart. She’d need the memory of that pain to steel herself against his charm.

For he could charm her again, all too easily.

She took his arm, ignoring the flex of lean muscle beneath her fingers, and tipped her head so Tilly could not overhear. “Are you certain you can make it back to the manor?”

One side of his mouth tilted upward. “No, actually. In fact, you may have to carry me.”

Please, let that be a joke. He was already standing too close—enough that she caught a breath of his scent, at once familiar and foreign. The clean sharpness she recalled so well, overlain by a hint of exotic spice, the enticing scent of India, if she didn’t miss her guess.

Damn her heart. It insisted on pulsing all the harder, as if it had forgotten the way he’d broken it. And that was the last thing she needed.

“Shall—” For some reason her voice emerged on an oddly husky note. She cleared her throat before trying again. “Shall I leave you here and send the footmen down? Your aunt might even have a sedan chair spirited away somewhere.”

He gave a soft laugh. “If anyone still owns a sedan chair in this day and age, it would be my aunt. I believe I’d rather rely on my own two legs as far as they’ll carry me.”

And wasn’t that just like him to insist on self-reliance? The very thing that had called him to the East India Company eight years ago when his father died, leaving the family’s finances in a disastrous state. Alexander had taken his father’s remaining ship and chanced everything the Sanfords had left on a voyage to the Orient.

Her lips tingled at the memory of their last kiss. It had tasted of poignancy, sadness mingled with hope. In delaying his personal happiness to restore his family’s fortunes, she’d thought him admirable. Noble. Everything a hero out of a fairy tale should be. Surely such a man would keep his promise to come home and marry her. What a naïve little chit she’d been.

My thoughts on the book:

First off, I thought the cover was enticing and definitely draws those readers that determine if they’ll read the book or not by the cover. I may or may not be one of those. The cover was a plus.

I am a great fan of this era and thought the book was well written and had a great storyline. I was not disappointed with any part of the book. I enjoyed the characters, the setting, and the adventure.

I also found no errors in the book, which really pleased me. If there is one error, I am the one who catches it; and that is a pet peeve of mine. I am giving What a Lady Craves five stars. I know that any reader who enjoys the era will love this book.

My apartment intercom buzzed. “Yes?” I answered.
“It’s Kyle Aldsworth.” He had a deep, rich voice in spite of the static that accompanied it.
“Great. I’ll be right down.” I ran to the window that overlooked the sidewalk in front of my apartment. I didn’t have a great angle. The door to our building was narrow and sat behind a wrought iron gate between Cuddy’s Clip Shop and Grandpa Guo’s Shoe Repair. Cuddy’s was two floors below us, and if guests were standing too close to the door, they were blocked from view by the barber pole attached to the side of the building.
Kyle stood a few feet from the door, allowing me a birds-eye view of dark, thick hair and a navy suit. If he looked up, I’d be able to see his face, which Jayne had compared to a clean-shaven Jake Gyllenhaal. Of course, if he looked up, he’d probably see I was spying out my window instead of coming to the door. I took one last look at my gray and white striped dress, grabbed my yellow cardigan, and headed down.
“You must be Charlotte,” he said when I opened the door. I smiled and looked up—yes up—at one of the most incredible faces I’d ever gone on a date with. Jayne had been wrong. He wasn’t a beardless Jake Gyllenhaal. He was Jake plus Cary Grant plus Captain VonTrapp, with a little of Jonny Lee Miller’s Mr. Knightley thrown in for good measure. Perhaps that sounds ridiculous, but you weren’t looking at him.
All intelligent thought abandoned me, leaving me unable to remember for sure what my name was.
What kind of game was Jayne playing with me? Kyle was much too beautiful for me. He’d have probably been too beautiful for Grace Kelly.
“You are Charlotte Emerson, right?”
How long had I been standing there gawping at him?
“Yes. I’m Charlotte.”
“Whew! You had me worried for a second. I’m Kyle. It’s good to meet you.” He extended his hand and shook mine. His hand was perfect—good size, warm and dry, nice grip without too much enthusiasm. He was a hand-shaking artist. Great. He’d stopped shaking my hand and I hadn’t relinquished my grip. I quickly withdrew mine and turned to lock the iron gate. My face burned, and I fidgeted with the key for a few extra seconds to give my cheeks a chance to return to their normally fair complexion.
Kyle was smiling when I turned back around. “My car’s around the corner.”

Turning Friends into Characters

I recently read a quote by J.K. Rowling that said there was a part of her in the characters of Harry, Hermione and Ron.

That makes sense.

I constantly use my own idiosyncrasies and habits in creating  my protagonists, antagonists, secondary characters…the write-what-you-know rule has always been drummed in me and who do you know better than yourself?

Writers observe; they take in as much as they can – sight, sounds, smells, etc – and use those observations to create.  The homeless man on the corner can spark something, as can the way your mother used to yell at you to pick up your dirty clothes.

What about using friends as the basis of your characters though?

Imagine your best friend wrote a book and your heart is bursting with pride.  As you’re racing through the pages, trying to finish as quickly as you can to be able to write a glowing review for her, you come across a character…that sounds a lot like you.

She never mentioned you were in her book.

Not everyone would want themselves portrayed in print.  Sure if, it’s a glowingly positive image of you, you might be flattered.  But what if it’s not?

Hopefully, if she’s that good of a friend, she won’t mention to all about how you once got so sick from tequila that you threw up and then spent long minutes investigating the inner workings of the toilet? Or about how you got a speeding ticket and embarrassed yourself trying to get out it.  Or about how you accidently let a fart escape as you laughed during a presentation.  What if you were reading along and found your worst memory embedded in the pages of her book?

Advice for the author:  Don’t make it obvious that you’re using a friend as the basis of a character.  Be subtle; don’t take everything about them!  And if you do make it obvious, tell your friend.  For my new book, I came right out and told the boys from the store they were going in as characters and they loved the idea.  Some people will love the thought of being in a book.  Some people won’t.  Always be respectful.

For me, it’s more fun to use friends as characters when it’s not obvious.  When the friend doesn’t even know you’re borrowing quirks and traits.  I have a character in my first book, Baby! Baby? Baby?!  that is based on a friend of mine, and she’s never once realized this!  It’s my little secret.

For the reader: be flattered if you’re included in a book.  Realize that you made enough of an impact in someone’s life for them to immortalize you.  They have observed something about you – hopefully not too embarrassing – that has helped them create.  You are an inspiration. You are a muse.  You are important to them.

Plus, sometimes situations or eccentricities are too memorable NOT to be used. My friend who counted all the holes in the toilet after she threw up?  That scene is so going in my next book!  Sorry, Cheryl!

My Life in Review – The Traveling Midori

I have been a member of a group on Facebook for almost a year now. It is a group of people who are enamoured with Midoris, and to celebrate the year anniversary of the group and to promote friendship, one of the members came up with the idea of traveling Midoris. The concept behind the group was that there would x number of groups – depending upon the number of interested parties – and each group would have its own hand-made Midori. This Midori would take a year-long trip to be documented by each member of each group as they in turn hosted the Midori for a week in their lives.

I think the group ended up with approximately ten groups of ten people. These Midoris are traveling world-wide at this very moment, and to me, that is exciting. I am part of the Pioneer Dorian group and I am experiencing my week right now! Each of these Midoris have been hand-crafted by the members of the group and are works of art in their own right. Each person hosting the Midori is encouraged to document their life and add a little of themselves to the book, giving each book its own unique history. It will take a year for each Midori to complete its journey. At that time, the books will be assigned to a new group and begin a new year of travel.

It is very interesting to flip through the pages and see what other’s have chosen to leave of themselves. Some of the participants are artists, some are writers, some lead busy lives, and some lead quiet lives. The journey of each book is also being documented on Instagram with the hashtags #travelingdori #pioneerdorian and others, each representing the name of the group’s Midori. You’ll find us on Twitter and on Facebook in the Traveling Dori group.

This is my story:

I received a package in the mail on Saturday, June 7, 2014. I wasn’t expecting the package as we are not warned ahead of time. It is a surprise for each of us when the Midori will arrive. Even as I opened the envelope, and peered inside, I was still not certain what I was seeing. It was when I pulled out a leather sleeve and looked inside that I realized I was the next recipient of the Pioneer Dorian. As I sat down and began to thumb through the different books, I was taken by surprise by the artistic talents of the person before me. It gave me pause, and I began to picture what I might leave behind for the next person.

Where the person before me was surely a free spirit – drawing and writing in a random fashion – I am not. I shall leave my mark upon the Pioneer Dorian in a much different way – a way that speaks to me, as the next recipient of this piece of history will no doubt do. I will decorate my pages with stickers and washi tape. I will add a ribbon marker to mark my place, pink, as that is my favorite color.

While some are whimsical, I am not. If I contribute art, my mark will be a carefully thought-out Zentangle with precise lines made with intention.

As I turn the pages of this wonderful book, this traveling Midori, I will bring order to it for the short time it is with me – then, I shall send it forward where it will be transformed once again.

I hope you enjoyed the story and enjoy the pictures of the traveling Pioneer Dorian – next stop – Georgia, USA!

Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.

Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless, but she’s turned herself around—she’s respectably engaged and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case.

Laney will be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf and her chance at a quiet, contented life. His seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido was only outdone by her constant urge to butt heads with him. But when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help.

Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but Laney has always been pretty reckless…

Jodi Linton lives and works in Texas, with her husband and two kids. She can be found cozied up to the computer escaping into a quirky world of tall tales, sexy, tight jean wearing cowboys, and a protagonist with a sharp-tongue quick enough to hang any man out to dry.  She is currently at work on her next Deputy Laney Briggs book.

Excerpt:

The station was bustling with commotion when I opened the door. Two men in black suits with Texas Ranger badges were sitting on top of my desk. I scanned the tiny room for Elroy. He was hunkered down in a corner in his black rolling chair with an overload of treats—a Butterfinger, a half empty bottle of Dr Pepper, and a Big Grab of Cheetos sat in his lap. Our visitors were apparently getting to him.

I strolled on over to my desk and leaned over the top of it. “If you don’t mind guys, this here is my desk.”

The older gentlemen tipped his ten-gallon hat and stood up. “Sorry about that, miss.”

The younger one dropped his chin, and he winked suggestively at me.

I took a deep, calming breath, walked up behind him, and shoved him off my desk. He looked at me, shocked.

“Don’t ever make me ask twice,” I said.

A firm hand fell at the small of my back and rubbed up my shirt. I shot around, staring straight into Gunner’s smiling eyes.

“I’d do what the lady asked. Sometimes she scares the shit out of me.”

The young Ranger nodded and moved aside, all the while keeping a wary eye on me.

I turned my back on him. “Saw you outside my house last night,” I told Gunner.

“Just doing my job.” Gunner winked and sat down on the edge of my desk.

“Spying on me isn’t—” I began, but the older, button-nosed Ranger wearing the Stetson moved into my view, arresting my attention. He was round at the waist, and his hair had seen better days, back when he had some. There was also a jelly stain on his left boob that I couldn’t stop starring at.

Nodding, Gunner tapped the outer edge of my desk in a goodbye or see you later, then followed the button-nosed man toward the back by the cell. Not only did I have to bite my tongue and play nice with Gunner Wilson in town, I was also being asked to let the Texas Ranger have free range of the station. I was a broken heel away from a nervous breakdown.

A little too quickly, Gunner reappeared at my desk, waving a piece of paper at me. “Want in on this, Laney?”

I snatched the paper from him. “What is it?”

“Bosley’s financial records. Take a look.”

“How did you get this?”

“Just came over the fax.”

“We have a fax?”

He grinned and winked. “Big boys are in town. You do now.”

This is a spotlight of the book only. I did not read the book and therefore cannot recommend or not recommend the book.
