Love and Miscommunication by Elyssa Friedland – Review, 5 stars

LoveAndMissCommPBThis unforgettable debut novel asks us to look up from our screens and out at the world…and to imagine what life would be like with no searches, no status updates, no texts, no Tweets, no pins, and no posts

Evie Rosen has had enough. She’s tired of the partners at her law firm e-mailing her at all hours of the night. The thought of another online date makes her break out in a cold sweat. She’s over the clever hashtags and the endless selfies. So when her career hits a surprising roadblock and her heart is crushed by Facebook, Evie decides it’s time to put down her smart phone for good. (Beats stowing it in her underwear—she’s done that too!)

And that’s when she discovers a fresh start for real conversations, fewer distractions, and living in the moment, even if the moments are heartbreakingly difficult. Babies are born; marriages teeter; friendships are tested. Evie just may find love and a new direction when she least expects it, but she also learns that just because you unplug your phone doesn’t mean you can unplug from life.

My Review –

Love and Miscommunication is a cute novel that reminds us to put the phones down, turn off the computer, unplug the iPods and visit! Talk! Listen! Communicate face to face!

How can any of us even think of discarding our much-loved cell phones and computers?! I often hear of friends going out to dinner and all the cell phones are unceremoniously dumped in the center of the table and the first one to pick a phone up – pays. I can think of several, well, actually numerous times when I happen to be having a conversation with someone and they were checking the phone or texting at the same time and I’ve just stopped mid-sentence and they didn’t notice. I’m sure this has happened to us all at some point in our lives – tell the truth.

How does an up and coming attorney come unplugged after being fired for sending way too many emails?

festive chic attire. What the hell did that mean? Whatever it was intended to convey, it felt like a tall order after a ten-hour workday on a Saturday. She pulled open the bifold doors of her overstuffed closet, filled mostly with conservative work suits that blocked the view of her formal-wear options. From the back, she pried out the navy blue crepe dress that she had last worn to her great-aunt’s memorial service. By substituting sensible pumps with strappy sandals and adding dangly earrings, the dress could likely make the transition from funeral to celebratory…Her blackberry screeched like a rattlesnake … as she hastened to throw on lipstick and apply eyeliner… no such luck would it fit in her sequined bag…she didn’t know what to do…Carrying her phone all night was out of the question. Her friends would be merciless about her “Crackberry” addition. Leaving it home was also a nonstarter…Quickly, and trying as best she could not to consider the implications for the rest of her evening, she hiked her dress over her waist and slipped the PDA into her cotton panties… Evie checked her Blackberry so often that it was actually fitting it should take on the role of a bodily appendage. Someday, a more evolved version of her would emerge from the womb with a smart phone already implanted. She reached back down to lock the keys so she wouldn’t accidentally call anyone from down there. When her phone was safely secured between the grooves of her body and the fabric of her underwear, she actually felt somewhat satisfied with her solution and took a deep breath…everything would be okay…

Love and Miscommunication follows Evie for a year-long sabbatical of being unplugged and falling in love. The book is well-written and contains its fair share of comedy that will make you laugh. I actually can’t wait to read more by this author and I encourage you to add this book to your list of books to read.

London Lovers # 2

Blurb:

The moment those words come out of the doctor’s mouth, I feel sick.

So sick.
The life I have dreamed of…obliterated.
And Brody.
God, Brody.
How will he look at me?
How can he accept me?
He’ll know what I hid from him.
He’ll know everything.
It’s over. It’s completely over. I can’t tell him “I love Us” anymore.
Even though I do.
Even though it will kill me.
I can’t tell him anything. Everything is ruined. Pummeled. Broken.
I have to leave him. I have to give up us.
I know he’ll come after me.
I just have to do something to make him not want to.

Excerpts:

CHAPTER Five

“I think you need a spruce, Lez,” he states deadpan.

“A spruce? And what the hell does that entail?”

“Like a spa visit?” Angela asks excitedly.

“Not a spa exactly. More like…a cleanse.” Frank fixes a salacious grin on me as he appears excited for what he has in mind. I squirm, feeling nervous about where the hell this is going.

“I’ve done cleanses before, they are miserable,” Angela says, dramatically raising her glass and taking a drink.

“This is a different kind of cleanse. It could be miserable for Leslie, but I know many mates who would bloody love it.”

“What’s involved?” I ask warily. Why the hell would I agree to something that might make me miserable?

“It’s…what I would call…a seven-step program. You have to follow all of the steps in order to gain the maximum benefits and achieve full happiness. Do you agree to it?”

“Agree to what? To doing this crazy cleanse that I have no clue what’s even involved? Absolutely not! I can’t even drink black coffee, Frank. If this cleanse drink tastes disgusting, I can’t do it.”

“Nothing will taste disgusting on this cleanse, I assure you,” he replies cryptically.

“I don’t know.”

“You need this, Leslie. You’ve been in a funk ever since Finley got engaged to that sex monster, Brody.”

I blanch. Frank has a huge man-crush on Brody. It all started when he got a full-frontal Magic Mike image of Brody and Finley one morning at the house. Brody’s a good-looking guy, don’t get me wrong. But I see him more like a brother.

“So, this cleanse you’re suggesting will get me out of this funk?”

“Without question,” Frank says, and turns his wide brown eyes on me. He’s sincere. I can see it in his demeanor. He genuinely wants me to do this.

“I’m not interested in a boyfriend, Frank. I don’t want a relationship.”

“That’s not what this is about. I promise.”

I smirk sneakily and Frank jumps up thrusting his hands into the air in victory, knocking his chair down in the meantime. Several people gawk at his obnoxious display.

Holy balls. This is Frank. What have I gotten myself into?

Author PhotoAmy Daws is a goof of epic proportions. She enjoys making dumb videos and laughing at herself…a lot. It gets awkward. She thinks she should have tried her hand at improv theater but figured she’d learn how life looks behind the lens of a camera first.

She also thinks talking about herself in the third person isn’t awkward at all.

Amy lives in South Dakota with her husband, Kevin, and their miracle daughter, Lorelei. The long-awaited birth of Lorelei is what inspired Amy’s first book, Chasing Hope, and her passion for writing.

Amy’s contemporary romance books are a part of the The London Lovers Series and currently have two installments out with more to come. Her writing style is emotional and self-deprecating with awkward humor sprinkled in. Basically, if she makes you cry happy and sad tears…she’s achieved her goal. Extra points if you have to blow your nose.

Amy’s inspiration for writing is and always will be her six precious angel babies and her daughter, Lorelei. On most nights, you can find Amy and her family dancing to Strawberry Shortcake’s theme song or stuffing themselves inside children’s-sized playhouses because there is nothing they wouldn’t do for their little miracle.

My Review –

Let Me Love You Again picks up where Here in My Heart leaves off. Anna DeStefano weaves a wonderfully deep story with  complex characters. This book is more than just a wonderful love story, it delves into the foster care system and how loving parents can make so much difference in the lives of their foster children, so much so that the lines of original birth cease to exist.

It is a story about re-visiting the past and mending broken hearts to find new love. Let Me Love You Again is a heart-warming story that will stir emotions down deep inside as you read the book.

The writing was suburb and I am giving the book five stars.

My Review –

Running Fire was an amazing read. The writing was superb. The action keeps you on the edge of your seat. The romance leaves you swooning.

I truly don’t know what else to say about the book. It was a perfect story. Running Fire depicts real life in the military. It picks you up, flies you in a helicopter, and sets you down in a front row seat of war. The action swallows you whole. You never quite know what lies around the next corner, in the next cave, or the next mountain. It is a story of trust, betrayal, and taking care of one’s own.

If you’ve never read a Lindsay McKenna book, start with this one. You will soon find yourself devouring every one of her books.

I wish there were more than five stars.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Brian Michael Good is a self-made man. He has lived a life buffeted by character-altering hurricanes. His life storms began in his trauma-filled childhood within his dysfunctional family.

He survived childhood verbal, physical, and sexual abuse; the death of two siblings; the stigma of being homeless – not once, but three times; two bankruptcies; a six-pound cancer that was doubling every two months; a near-fatal suicide attempt in 2003; the death of his best friend; three divorces; and the rejection of his only daughter.

How can one man encounter so many hurricanes, survive them, learn from them, and then strive to make the world a better place? This was the question Brian asked himself that led to “Never Surrender Your Soul.”

Excerpt –

SURRENDERING YOUR SOUL

We are taught to nurture the health of our body, mind, and soul; often they are neglected. While our health declines as each year passes, we value our soul more knowing that it is all that will remain.

We are born with free will, a soul, and a ticket to the afterlife. Your soul comes with a passport and visa with a destination of the afterlife. Your passport is your free will, which allows you to choose your belief system. You should nurture your belief system (your visa) as a mother nurtures an infant. It is best to choose a belief system that allows you to be fair-minded and even-handed. Be aware you may lose your visa based on the belief system you choose, making your ticket to the afterlife with your soul unable to reach your desired destination. Your ticket to the afterlife is your soul. Decide to keep your ticket to the afterlife by never surrendering your soul and count yourself a survivor.

If you surrender your visa, making your passport useless and thus your ticket to the afterlife worthless, one may not make it to the afterlife except for Weshemehe [my universal word for “God”] of second chances.

Reincarnation is a possibility. Even if one could prove reincarnation to be true, each life of reincarnation would most likely get substantially harder… especially if you kill, die by suicide, steal, or take someone’s free will. If you screwed up in a lifetime and surrendered your soul in your present life, you have until your last breath to meet your true destiny. A true destiny must be met without greed or thirst for money. It must be unselfish and spiritual in nature, only then will Weshemehe consider giving you a second chance. Continue reading

Livia Chadwick is a photographer by day and a self-proclaimed rock slut by night.

All is going according to plan… until she meets Jack.

Jack Tanner is a contractor-turned-musician in a small-town cover band suddenly thrust into the limelight. Then again… there’s a gorgeous brunette in the audience tonight, checking him out with the most incredible green eyes he’s ever seen.

She’s looking for a fling.
He’s looking for forever.

It’s gonna be one helluva summer.

Set in the summer of 1995, Down the Shore takes the reader on a tour through some of the Jersey shore’s hottest hot spots over one, sleepless, flannel-clad summer. Jack’s lips purse together, as if he’s literally trying to bite his tongue. Instead, his eyelids lower to half-mast as he says, “You’re not so tough, you know. You try to put up this big front, but your act is pretty transparent.”

I put a hand to my hip. “What the hell is that supposed to mean? I’m not putting on an act.”

“Sure you are. This whole groupie thing you’ve got going on. I’m not buying it.”

“I wasn’t trying to sell it.”

At that, he cracks a small smile, and it makes me feel more vulnerable than had I been standing there completely naked. You know, kind of like how he almost is. Continue reading

Solitude Interrupted by LJ Scar – Review 4 stars

Laken – When you grow up like I did, you aren’t an open book. You guard your past, you don’t give everyone your life story. Sounds easy enough especially since I just graduated college, moved to the wilds of West Virginia with my dog, and signed a contract for an eighteen month nursing job. The problem is my landlord, Cole. He doesn’t get that I need to keep my distance. He jokes that I am on the run. Maybe I am. But this remoteness is what I need to put what happened in perspective, to put myself back together. I’m not running for the hills despite Cole’s pursuit. I may just end up running into his arms.

Cole – When you co-own an outfitter that specializes in guiding white water rafters everyday is an adventure. The elusive, blond beauty who rented my neighboring, riverside cabin was not what I expected. My brother and friend gave her two nights before she couldn’t take living out in the woods alone next to a relentless flirt who hadn’t shaved in six months just to win a bet. She said she came here to figure her life out without any distractions, at least not the romantic kind. But I love a challenge, I’m a thrill seeker. She needs a little excitement and I’m more than determined to be the one who interrupts her solitude.

Funny, thoughtful, and heart wrenching – “Solitude Interrupted” is the unforgettable love story of a courageous girl who overcame so much and the reckless adventurer who couldn’t turn away from her.

Content contains profanity and adult situations.

Author – LJ Scar is my pseudonym and alter-ego. She lives hillside in a tiny cottage that has a view of the mountains and the ocean on a sprawling parcel of land where all the people, dogs, and things she loves are within reach. She makes a living off the results of her imagination. She is a morning person who has great hair even after a rough night of sleep. She loves to exercise and doesn’t love junk food.

Nah…but someday. In the meantime, I live outside Louisville, Kentucky with my husband, a deceptively smart old border collie/husky mix, and a loving but troublemaking English Pointer/lab mix -both are rescues. I try to think up vivid locations based off places I’ve lived or vacationed and dream up romances and complications from observing strangers.

My Review –

Solitude Interrupted is a good book. I felt the story was well-written, the characters were solid, and the story-line believable. The cover of the book suited the story inside quite well.

This is a story of life and life’s struggles. It is a story of friendship and of finding yourself in the middle of chaos. The characters were very likable and real.

I did find a number of errors throughout the book and that caused a slight distraction for me. I enjoyed the story tremendously, but in my opinion, a 4-star book due to the errors.

Nicholas senses that his new squire is not what he seems. His gentle attempts to break through the boy’s defenses leave Elizabet powerless to stem the desire that engulfs her. And when the truth is exposed, she’ll have to trust in Nicholas’s honor to help her people—and to surrender to his touch…

My Review of the series –

Every now and then I really enjoy reading a series. You have the chance to become part of a family and they become your friends for a while. The Calloways is just that type of series.

When I read that Barbara Freethy, the author of The Calloways and Bella Andre’, the author of The Sullivans were friends, I expected the series to be along the same lines. My instincts were correct. The two authors even share writing styles. For me personally, it wasn’t a disappointment because I enjoyed both series.

Regarding the storylines, I found the books enjoyable, although somewhat predictable. It didn’t deter me from reading them, because once you meet one sibling, you want to meet them all and in turn, they all have a story to tell.

I thought the writing was good and I found no grammatical errors. Each book is a stand-alone read, but you’ll find the books more enjoyable if you read them all and in order.

With summer almost upon us, or at least those beautiful spring days, if you are looking for a good clean romance series, The Calloways will fit the bill quite nicely. I’m giving the books 5 stars.

Her father stared back at her, his eyes dark and unreadable. “Why are you here, Sara?”

“I wanted to be here for your birthday. It’s been a long time since we’ve shared more than an email. We should talk, catch up with each other.”

“Why on earth would you want to talk to me?”

The confusion in his eyes made her realize just how far apart they’d drifted. “Because you’re my father. You’re my family. We’re the only ones left.”

“Do you need money?”

“This isn’t about money. Mom would not have wanted us to end up like strangers. We need to improve our relationship.”

He stared back at her for a long moment, then said, “There’s nothing left for you here, Sara. I wish you well, but we both need to move on. If you stay, it won’t go well. We’ll only disappoint each other.”

Her chest tightened, the finality of his words bringing pain as well as anger. Her father was like a brick wall. She kept throwing herself at him, trying to break through his resistance, but all she ever achieved was a new batch of emotional bruises.

“You’re a grown woman now,” he added. “You don’t need a father.”

“Not that I ever really had one,” she countered, surprising herself a little with the words. She was used to holding her tongue when it came to her dad, because talking usually made things worse.

“I did my best.”

“Did you?”

A tickle caught at her throat and her eyes blurred with unwanted tears. She had not come here to cry. She sniffed, wondering why the air felt so thick. It took a minute to register that it was not her emotions that were making her eyes water, but smoke.

The same awareness flashed in her father’s eyes. “Damn,” he swore. “The kitchen—I was cooking—”

He ran out of the room, and she followed him down the stairs, shocked by how thick the smoke was in the entry.

She was on her dad’s heels when he entered the kitchen. The scene was unbelievable. Flames shot two feet in the air off a sizzling pot on the stove. The fire had found more fuel in a stack of newspapers on the counter that had been left too close to the burner, those sparks leaping to the nearby curtains.

Her father grabbed a towel and tried to beat out some of the flames, but his efforts only seemed to make things worse. Embers flew everywhere, finding new places to burn, the heat growing more and more intense. Moving to the sink, she turned on the faucet and filled up a pitcher, but it was taking too long to get enough water. She threw some of it at the fire, but it made no difference.

“Move aside,” her dad shouted, grabbing two hot pads.

“What are you doing?” she asked in confusion.

He tried to grab the pot and move it to the sink, but she was in the way, and he stumbled, dropping the pot in the garbage. She jumped back from an explosion of new fire.

“We have to call 911,” she said frantically. But there was no phone in the kitchen, and her cell phone was in her bag by the entry. “Let’s get out of here.”

Her father was still trying to put out the fire, but he was getting nowhere.

“Dad, please.”

“Get out, Sara,” he said forcefully, then ran into the adjacent laundry room.

“Wait! Where are you going?”

“I have to get something important,” he yelled back at her.

“Dad. We need to get out of the house.” She coughed out the words, but she might as well have remained silent because her dad had vanished through the laundry room and down the back stairs to the basement. She couldn’t imagine what he had to get. There was nothing but gardening tools and cleaning supplies down there.

She started to follow him, then jumped back as the fire caught the wallpaper next to her head, sizzling and leaping towards her clothing.

“Dad,” she screamed. “We need to get out of the house.”

A crash echoed through the house. Then all she could hear was the crackling of the fire.

Sara ran through the flames and down the stairs into the basement. A single light bulb dangled from a wire over the stairs, showing her father in a crumpled heap on the cement floor.

She dropped to her knees next to his still body. He was unconscious, blood under his head, and his right leg was twisted in an odd position. She put a hand on his chest. His heart was still beating.

“Dad,” she said. “Wake up.”

He blinked groggily. “Sara?” he asked in confusion. “What are you doing here?”

“The kitchen is on fire. We need to get out of the house.” A glance back over her shoulder revealed smoke pouring through the open door at the top of the stairs. There was no way out of the basement without going through the kitchen.

Her father tried to sit up, but quickly fell back, groaning with pain. “My leg is broken. You go.”

“I can’t leave you here. That’s not an option.”

“You can’t carry me. Go. Get help.”

“I’ll be right back,” she promised.

She ran up the stairs, shocked and terrified when she saw how much worse the fire had gotten in literally minutes. The heat was intense. She could barely breathe, and there was a wall of flames between her and the only way out. She couldn’t afford to be scared. Grabbing a towel off the top of the nearby washing machine, she covered her nose and mouth, and prepared to make a dash for it.

Before she could move, a figure appeared on the other side of the flames—a man.

A wave of relief swept through her. Help had arrived.

He barreled through the fire and smoke, batting away the flames as if they were troublesome bees. When he stopped in front of her, her heart jumped again.

“Aiden?” She lowered the towel from her face. He was the last Callaway she wanted to see.

Excerpt:

“What if he comes here?”

“He won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“You’re right,” he admitted finally. He sighed heavily. “I’ve known him a long time and this doesn’t gel with what I know of him. He’s not going to hurt you.”

“You sound so certain.” Her fingers danced over his ribs, as though she wasn’t sure where to place her hands. “Why?

“Because you’re mine,” he said, giving voice to the powerful feelings he could finally identify for what they were. “And if he puts his hands on you or our daughter, I’ll kill him.”

And then he kissed her.

It was a powerful kiss, filled with a riot of emotions that had started building in him years ago when she’d first left him. It was a kiss filled with fear. With uncertainty.

With desire.

He gave in to the maelstrom inside him, holding back only enough to be certain that he wasn’t crossing the line.

Mel opened to his kiss, wanting badly to push away the sadness and the fear and the worry that had been squeezing the air from her lungs since she’d found Gale outside her office.

There was fear in her response, a tacit admission that this was something fleeting and yet, it was the only tangible thing between them.

He shifted then until their bodies pressed together, until she breathed with him and felt part of her soul take flight from the bonds of worry and sadness and daily life.

Her fingers flexed against his ribs. Gale felt the moment she gave in to the kiss, savored the moment of her surrender. Her body relaxed against his, fitting perfectly against his chest. Continue reading

EXCERPT:

“Pay attention, honey,” Jase said to Brook Lynn. “This isn’t a lesson you’ll want to learn twice. You throw a tantrum in my room, you get wet.” Jase tossed the little wildcat into the deep end, hoping to calm her down.

Jessie Kay beat at his arm, screeching, “Idiot! Her implants aren’t supposed to be waterlogged. She’s supposed to cover them with a special adhesive.”

Please. “Implants are always better wet.” He should know. He’d handled his fair share.

“They aren’t in her boobs, you moron. They’re in her ears!”

Well, hell. I’m on silent, she’d said, the words suddenly making sense. “Way to bury the lead,” he muttered.

Brook Lynn came up sputtering. She swam to the edge of the pool and climbed out with her sister’s help, then arranged her hair over her ears before glaring up at him, reminding him of an avenging angel.

He’d hoped the impromptu dunk would lessen her appeal.

He’d hoped in vain. Continue reading

Meet the Calloways by Barbara Freethy – Giveaways, Blitz, Guest Post

#1 NY Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy talks strong women, hot guys and family series… Check out what she has to say then Read on for more information about this blog tour and all its great prizes!

One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Eleanor Roosevelt: “A woman is like a tea bag. You don’t know how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”

This quote perfectly describes the heroines in my new connected family series: The Callaways. I love to write about ordinary women who get caught up in extraordinary adventures. My heroines don’t always know what they’re made of until they’re tested.

While we sometimes associate strong female characters with over-the-top roles like vampire slayer or some other kick-ass profession, I believe most women, even the quiet ones, have a superhuman core of strength that enables them to change the world they live in and also to change the men who love them. In my books, the heroine’s strength is enhanced, not only by a new and powerful romantic relationship but also her personal journey to find herself

In the first book in the Callaway series, ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS, the heroine, Sara, has grown up in a troubled family and is estranged from her father. She grew up next door to the chaotic, fun-loving Callaway family and often envied the relationships she saw on the other side of the fence. She also had a huge crush on the second oldest male in the family, Aiden Callaway.

While Sara was a studious, serious girl in high school, Aiden was the charming rebel. As teenagers they were not ready for each other, but now they meet again as adults and both are facing pivotal moments in their lives.

Aiden is recovering from an injury he acquired as a smokejumper and grieving for the loss of his best friend, who died during their last jump together. Sara has come home to repair the relationship with her father, only to discover that there are family secrets that will change everything she thought she knew about her past and her parents.

Sara has to find the strength within herself to risk her heart on a man who could quite possibly break it, to face a terrible lie and to find a way to forgive her father. Aiden also has to find a way to deal with the secret that took his friend’s life. Together these two characters find strength within themselves and also draw strength from each other, which is, really, what love is all about.

As a reader, I love books that have layers: romance, mystery, adventure and surprises. As a writer, I strive to bring those same elements to all of my stories. My heroines have to be as strong as the heroes. And I always hope that they inspire my readers in some way, too.

I grew up reading books about strong female characters, and I know those reading experiences helped shaped some of my own attitudes about the kind of woman I wanted to be.

Who are some of your favorite female characters? And what do you love most about them?

My Review – Stay tuned!

Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers.

So, why the new pen name?

As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance. However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with. That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.

Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage. The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.

I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates. Sign up to receive my newsletter for updates and news!

Excerpt
Whatever she’d bottled up had come loose. Her appetite met her need, which should have scared him. But for the first time, he wanted her to need him. He could fill he up. She was starving for it.
And so was he.
She was sleeping, and he fell into her rhythm, inhaling when she did, exhaling also in tandem, feeling her soft sex crowning his thigh. He thought of all the lovely things he wanted to say to her, but knew he shouldn’t. He knew the speaking part would mess up what he now felt, something he rarely felt.

Happiness.
He tried to breathe without making a sound, hoping that this time together, which was as precious to him as the love making part, was prolonged for as long as possible. She was fire and ice. The salt and the caramel. She tucked inside the hard exterior of his soul and shivered, rested there under his protection.
He must have twitched or done something, because she startled and rose up quickly, rolling to the side and covering herself up. He could almost feel her heavy thoughts tossing about the room as he viewed her light pink spine glowing in the near moonlight as she sat on the edge of the bed away from him. An inch of her butt crack was in shadow, but the alabaster surface of her skin was flawless and made her look like a statue.
He inhaled without a sound, and let his index finger trace down the middle of her back, traveling over the ridges of her vertebra. She stiffened at first, then rolled her head to the side and killed him with the blue gaze that showed him she was still hungry.
“Come here, Megan,” he said, worried he’d been a little too loud.
She touched her shoulder with her ear in a shy move that belied her real feelings for him. He could see it in the coral shaded corners of her lips, how they quirked up at the ends.

How far would you go to avenge your family and save the one you love?

My Review –

Sometimes I think it was God’s little joke to plunk me down in the middle of, well, today, when I love the past so much. Maybe it was because I would have been the lady’s maid rather than the Lady herself, and ended up working in a bawdy tavern.

It’s been a while since I’ve been so enthralled with a series, so much so, that I am on pins and needles waiting for the next book. ALAINA CLAIBORNE is part mystery and part romance, something not every author can intertwine successfully. MK McClintock has spun an enchanting tale deeply entrenched in the lands of Scotland and England that will leave you riveted to your chair until you turn the last page.

MK’s books feature strong men and stronger women. They follow their men across the oceans and continents, through and into danger, never backing down. They are Ladies of the Manor and just at home riding the finest thoroughbreds money can buy. They can waltz at a cotillion and in minutes, flee on horseback at breakneck speeds. The women stand up for their beliefs and love their men deeply.

The books are well written and transport you back in time with descriptive passages that leave you smack in the middle of the fray. You hear the bullets whizzing by, smell the dank dungeon, and the lavender bath waters. The plot has many twists and turns and leaves you guessing until the last moment. In my opinion, the books have everything it takes to be a winner. I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the beautiful covers on the books which help to give the reader a sense of place.

As well as having a great story line, the book was flawlessly written. I normally pick up on any grammatical error that crosses the page and I only found one in the two books that I’ve read. I have read many books, both good and bad, and MK McClintock can hold her own against the best of the best. I would give the books a rating higher than five stars were it available. It is not often that I find an author that I want to read every book of theirs that I can get my greedy little hands on. MK McClintock is one of those authors.

For avid readers of historical romance, you will not be disappointed. The book has all the elements you love – suspense, mystery, murder, intrigue, adventure, high-speed chase, and romance all wrapped up in the everyday lives of 19th century aristocracy in England and Scotland.

MK McClintock’s books include characters from each story, but they also stand alone as single books with complete story-lines and conclusions.

House Divided by Jennifer Peel – Review, Excerpt, Tour, Giveaway

House Divided (1)

Tour Schedule

house dividedHouse Divided

There is a law irrevocably decreed in the state of Alabama that you must choose a team. You’re either an Auburn fan or an Alabama Fan. There is no fence sitting or waffling. It’s one or the other. However, it doesn’t mean that you can’t fall in love with someone from the opposing side. They even have a name for it … House Divided.

Ellie Eaton and Brady Jackson were just such a couple, but unfortunately they were separated by more than just their loyalty to a university. Against the odds and against the rules, Ellie and Brady dove right into the forbidden current of friendship and then love. Their sweet, innocent romance was one for the storybooks, but old rules and family prejudices ultimately tore them apart, just as they were each ready to depart to their beloved universities, Ellie to Auburn and Brady to Alabama. But years later, when near tragedy strikes, they’re brought together again and given a second chance at love, this time with help from some very unlikely sources.

House Divided is a sweet romance filled with southern charm, a dash of humor and, for good measure, a pinch of lies and intrigue.

Praise for the Book

“House Divided was one of those books that made me want to ignore my children, my to-do list, my need for food, and pretty much anything else that would keep me from reading. Jennifer Peel has a real gift for depicting first love, heartbreak, and hope.”

“A tender, soft, story that truly is a gem to read.”

“Ms. Peel has created a story that stands as a tribute to true southern gentility, it’s foibles and strengths. Truly a beautiful read that gives heart and meaning to true devotion. She truly knows how to weave a story that has beauty and true southern charm.”

My Review –

I am still reading the book but so far I have to say I am loving it. I love sweet Southern charm and the book is quite full of it. I will tell you that name, “A house divided” is a very appropriate title and you won’t believe why!  I’ll be back to complete my review once I’ve finished the book so please stay tuned!

I grew up on the Western Slope in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. I learned to love the beauty of the outdoors, but not camping–unless staying overnight at the Marriott counts. I met my husband while living in Denver and then several years later we traded the beauty and majesty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains for the art and culture of Chicago, Illinois. My family and I enjoyed living near this world class city, despite the crazy cold winters, but new adventures awaited in Northern Alabama–just six hours away from Orange Beach, Alabama. These three magical places (the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Chicago, and Orange Beach) are the inspired locations used in several of my books.

EXCERPT

I was so thrilled that Brady was in my home that I didn’t notice he wasn’t acting like himself. I pulled him into our drawing room where the fireplace was lit and the twelve-foot high Christmas tree sparkled in the dimly illuminated room. Under the tree sat my wrapped present for Brady. I retrieved the present and sat in front of the fireplace on the floor. Brady sat next to me, and before I could say a word, he pulled me to him and kissed me like he never had before. It was like a man kissing a woman, not a boy kissing a girl. I could barely breathe when he was done. His breathing was ragged too.

“Quite a sexy book.”  —USAToday.com on Kentucky Home

“The funny, down-to-earth characters who fill the pages are wonderfully sympathetic and their chemistry is delightful, but it is the added dose of magic featured in each story that lends this book its unique charm. With subtle flair, Foster, Monroe and Title walk the narrow border between genres to great success.”  —RT Book Reviews on Delicious (4 stars)

The Warlord’s Wife by Sandra Lake – Review 5 stars

A stunning historical romance from debut author Sandra Lake transports readers to 12th century Sweden, where a powerful Viking lord will discover a fierce heart cannot be taken by mere force.

Lida was married to the love of her life for just two months when she became a widow. Pregnant and disowned by her late husband’s family for suspected infidelity, she was forced to return to her family in shame. Eight years later, uninterested in the prospect of finding another husband, she finds herself the unwilling object of a marriage contract with a powerful warlord. In a day, she is wed, bed, and put on a ship headed for Tronscar; an unknown icy stone and steel fortress.
Jarl Magnus is pleased to have taken a strong wife who, however stubborn she may be, will surely produce sons. However, he is less pleased with his wife’s additional baggage—a young daughter. But despite himself, Magnus falls for the daughter just as hard as the mother, and Lida’s heart is warmed to see the cold, serious Jarl move surprisingly fast into the role of stepfather.
When enemies attack Tronscar, Jarl Magnus’s nerves of steel waver, as the warrior fears his love for Lida will weaken him. But when his family is threatened, he’ll go to war to protect them, discovering along the way that they have the strength to protect themselves.

My Review –

For a first time author, Sandra Lake hit this one out of the ball park. I thought the writing was excellent and I enjoyed the story-line immensely.

The female lead was well-written, demure but strong. The male lead was a viking and was depicted as such. I’ve long had an obsession with vikings and I was enthralled with the character.

As in most viking stories, the viking sees what he wants and is quite determined to have it, and have it his way. They soon find out that things do not always go as planned and this story was no exception. He soon finds himself falling in love with his new wife’s little girl and he has absolutely no idea what to do with his new-found adoration.

The story would not be complete without a villain or two and their characters did not disappoint. You just couldn’t help but not like them. And, along with the villains, there were an assortment of other loyal men you can’t help but love as well.

I thought the story had all the elements I look for in a Viking story. There was viking meets girl and wonders why girl isn’t grateful to have him. There was a plot for revenge. There was love and romance and lots of men learning to understand women!

There were a number of errors in the book, but I think the copy I received was not fully edited. They were not that big of a distraction, it’s just that my eyes catch them. I think that anyone who loves a good viking story will love this book.

Sandra Lake was born somewhere in the wilds of Sweden. Surrounded by shirtless, blond men, she learned to sail, swing a sword and skin a bear when she was only three– wait no, that sounds more like Davy Crockett

The real Sandra was raised in rural Canada. She married her childhood sweetheart (who is blond and on occasion shirtless). They are currently living happily-ever-after along with their kids and unruly husky in eastern Canada.

If You Believe by Mya O’Malley

Sometimes love only comes once in a lifetime. For some lucky people, it is possible to love again.
Melody and Jack had shared an unforgettable love story that abruptly came to an end. Melody, left picking up the pieces, finds herself alone years later, with no hope or desire to date again. With the holiday season approaching, Melody finds it particularly difficult to get Jack out of her thoughts.
Jack isn’t sure if he’s an angel or a ghost, but his mind is set on one thing only, finding a new love for Melody by Christmas Eve at midnight. Easier said than done, with many obstacles to tackle, Jack underestimates how difficult the task is. With conflicting emotions, Jack takes it upon himself to find a man for a woman he still loves.
With the clock ticking as the holidays approach, this charming story of finding love the second time around will have you laughing and crying, but ultimately, it will have you believing in true love.

Author Catherine Bennett

I grew up in Ohio where I currently live with my husband and our two rescue Labradors. Some of my favorite things include reading, shopping, pepperoni pizza, Hershey bars and hanging out with my two grown sons. I also love dogs; so going to the dog park is cheap entertainment for my husband and I!

Growing up an only child, I had many imaginary friends. I believe this – and a love of books – fueled my desire to write. It was many years later that my dream of becoming a published author came true.

I’m grateful to God for always keeping a story in my heart and hope you are blessed and entertained by my book.

He looked up at the menu board.  “I’ll take a Grande.  Black, please.”

Chuckling, she thought about how impressed her dad would be with this guy.  He considered anyone who drank coffee black in the same category as his favorite actor, John Wayne.  She poured the coffee, and rang up his order.

“That’s two-dollars and fifty cents.”  He handed her his debit card, which she swiped.

He took the cup.  “Thanks.  Have a good one.”

“Yeah, you too.”

He walked over to one of the upholstered chairs and sank down into its well-used seat.  The shop owner had talked of replacing the pair of relics with some sturdy, leather ones.  Leather would flatter this guy much better than the faded paisley print on the old ones.  Devon glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.  Yes, leather was definitely his style, but not the biker stuff.  No, he’d look best in a rugged, mahogany leather jacket instead of the puffy, gray parka he wore.
