Comparison between the Zink hAppy and LG pocket printer and Do we ever use a bag for it’s original purpose?

My answer would have to be no.  I am always multi-purposing bags.Image (2) These two pictures are perfect examples. Both were originally intended to be make-up bags. I, of course, found better uses.

The green bag is an Orla Kiely bag from Target. I love her products and actually do have one of her make-up cases that does house my make-up.

This green bag, however, was the perfect size for my Zink hAppy printer. There are two zip compartments on this bag. One that is about 1.5″ in depth on top and then the larger bottom compartment. The top houses the recharging cord perfectly. The bottom compartment houses the Zink hAppy and two of the 2″ wide rolls of film. The case will protect them while traveling.

(The extra little photo at the upper right is a thank you note that I recently sent to someone who so thoughtfully gave me a plant. No one really wants to ask the recipient exactly what the florist sent, but at the same time, you’d like to know that it was as nice as what was described. This is when one of the little printers comes in handy. I snapped an photo and added some thank you text to the it and printed it. I then adhered it to stationary and mailed it. This would be especially nice to do for those holiday gifts that were mailed to you or your child.)

Image (4)The second photo shows a little bag I purchased from Talbots online this fall. I love the pink and blue combination; very feminine. It is just large enough to house the LG photo printer and its charging cord. It also has space to add a pack of extra film. While the Zink hAppy is much to large and bulky to tote around on a daily basis, this handy little LG is the perfect size to tuck into my tote bag.

While I enjoy using both products, I have to admit that I like the convenience of the LG’s size. Both products offer several of the same amenities: collage of photos and adding text. What the LG does not offer and is actually a great selling point for the Zink hAppy is the ability to print on sticker paper. Both products use the same type of film, only the Zink hAppy allows you to peel off the backing and adhere your photo to your choice of medium.

I keep a travel journal and this allows me to print and stick my photos alongside my commentary of the trip. I use an iPhone 5 and each printer has its own app that makes printing a snap. The Zink hAppy communicates via wireless and the LG uses Bluetooth. The Zink hAppy allows you the option of printing using several different size widths from 1/2″ up to 2″ and I think up to 18″ long. You can also make a banner using this device. When printing from my phone’s photo album I was actually able to print a number of photos without stopping. The photos were automatically clipped so when I cut the long thread, all I needed to do was peel each individual print off of the backing and place it on my book pages. These are options not offered by the LG. Your prints are 2×3″.

The quality of the printers is actually amazing for little printers. The photos from each of these two devices is comparable so either would be a good purchase. Both use Zero ink technology. The prices are comparable. The Zink hAppy did cost more because I purchased a battery so I did not have to rely on plugging the device in. The print paper is approximately the same for both. The packages contain different amounts of film. The jury is still out on the LG battery life. The Zink hAppy’s battery life last a very long time. I’m not sure if I charged the internal battery on the LG long enough – the light was green – or if it died quickly. The instructions are in another language with no English offered so I’m figuring out this printer with no help. It also does not have a designated on/off button per say; the Zink hAppy does. You definitely know when the printer is on and off.

*Note here – I just watched several You-Tube videos on this little stinker and it turns out the little lock/unlock button on the side is the on/off. I thought it meant that the device locked to insure the lid did not open.

The Zink hAppy can be dressed up with different colored skins (purchased separately). The LG comes in white, yellow, and pink.

I purchased both of these products and the above opinion is my own. If you have questions, please comment below and I’ll try to answer them from my own experience. I purchased my printers from Amazon. These are the links.

Technology Thursday – Wunderlist

Wunderlist iPad
Wunderlist iPad (Photo credit: Gustavo da Cunha Pimenta)

It’s Thursday again and that means revealing another one of my favorite apps!

Wunderlist is one of my all time favorite apps for list making – next to Evernote that is, and the one that I am featuring today! (You can find more apps under The Write Plan tab.)

Like Evernote, it syncs across my devices so if I am on the computer and need to jot down a note or add to my grocery list, it’s just a click away.

I downloaded and tried many different list apps before deciding on Wunderlist. I have been referred to as the app Queen by a couple of my friends – and I think I’ve earned every bit of the name calling in this case! Haven’t decided if that’s good or bad yet.

While I had to upgrade to Evernote Pro – that’s how much I love it – I have not upgraded to the paid version of Wunderlist. With the free version I can upload three docs or photos a day and I find that is enough for me.

2012 09 11 10.52.23 e1347375350407 Wunderlist The Best To Do List Application On The iPhone [iOS]

I am a list maker. I’m a pro at making lists. Did I mention how much I love lists? Wunderlist is great for making lists. I have a list for me, a list for Hubby, a grocery list, a to do list, and an errand list. I love that the lists are checklists. We list makers LOVE checking things off. We do not want to delete our tasks until we can visually see that all the tasks have been accomplished. Wunderlist gives me the freedom to do this. It allows me to flag important items on my lists and with a swipe, delete items. I enjoy being able to add sub-lists (in the form of check-lists) to my lists and with a simple movement/drag re-order them.

Wunderlist App
Wunderlist has an extremely high number of 5-star ratings. The app allows you to organize your life and your business all in one place. You can add important details – pictures, documents, notes, reminders, due dates and subtasks to your lists. You can share your list with any of your contacts and access your information from anywhere – iPhone, Android, PC, iPad, etc.  Wunderlist Pro is $4.99 a month and allows even more sharing as well as making comments. When you think of the cost of paper and the number of list you hand write and toss out, I would say that is quite a bargain.

It is important to remember that your phone isn’t just a phone, it’s a computer and should be utilized as such. Our phones are such amazing little creatures and can help us stay organized. Do you use Wunderlist? What is your take on it?

Tackling the Mail –

For some reason, mail seems to overwhelm even the most organized of people. I am proposing a few easy steps that I think will help you conquer the mail pile forever.

First, stop at the garbage can – preferably inside, because you should be tearing off the back page with your address and shredding it for security purposes. I usually dump the load of mail (and sometimes it is just that – a load) on the island in my kitchen. But, WAIT, I don’t leave it there, so walk off just yet. I quickly divide the envelopes and circulars/magazines in to two piles (one of each.) I know immediately if I am going to order from the catalog this month or not and chances are, I also receive an email from the company (I am currently working on my addiction to electronic mail.) If I have no intention of ordering, I tear off the back page and toss the remainder in the garbage. And so it goes with each piece of mail. Then, I tackle the envelopes. Most of the time it is junk, but I follow the same procedure. I tear off our name and address to shred and check for any documentation inside that may contain our information and then I toss. It seems more and more, as we attempt to protect our private information, credit card companies are filling out card applications for us before mailing them. For the life of me, I can’t figure out what’s up with that. Help us out here guys.

Also, if you are computer savvy (and even if you’re not) have your bills delivered electronically and eliminate even more mail. I set up an email called myfinancials@mail.com (use your name and gmail or yahoo, etc.) Only bills and financial documents go to that email. It is not a social email. This ensures your bills do not get lost in the shuffle of daily emails.

I also use an app called PaperKarma. You scan your mailing label and they take care of stopping the unwanted solicitations. It has helped tremendously in getting rid of those pesky flyers you get once a company sells your address information. I literally went from getting twenty mailings a day, to one or two a day.

Second - Now that you’ve sorted and thrown away all the unwanted mail, you have the bills left. If you utilize on-line bill pay with your bank, why file them away and have to handle them a second time, if all you need to do is set up the payment on-line? I make it a habit to only handle paper a minimal of times. When the water bill comes in, I immediately set it up for payment and file it. I don’t have to worry about remembering a due date. Before bill-pay was available, I would immediately write and date the check and put it in the envelope. Instead of a stamp, I would put the date it needed to be mailed. I then filed the bill and placed the envelope in my planner to be mailed on the appropriate date. I did this with each bill. If you do not have time to do this each day, place all of the bills in a file and either on Friday or Monday (or your choice of the day), write all the checks and record the mail date in place of a stamp.

Third – For other papers which need to be filed, such as insurance (medical, auto, etc.) I have files set up and the paperwork is filed as soon as the check is written. If you have magazine subscriptions, keep the renewal notices and payments all together in one place. Magazines are famous for sending you renewal notices a year in advance. You’ll know if you need to renew by quickly scanning the file. I typed up a chart and had columns for the magazine name, renewed date, and renewal date for easy reference.

Image representing Evernote as depicted in Cru...

Also, another idea to keep in mind is that most larger magazines are also available on-line to read on your tablet, kindle, or computer. This also eliminates clutter. When I read an article or see a recipe that I’d like to keep, I use the Evernote (available on Kindle, iPhone, computer, etc.) to save it to folders that I have set up. It is easily accessible and involves no clutter. You can read about the advantages of using Evernote here: http://mylifeonestoryatatime.com/2013/11/15/technology-thursday-a-gem-called-evernote/

For all other bills and receipts that need to be filed for tax purposes, I have a notebook system in place. You can read about it here: http://mylifeonestoryatatime.com/2014/02/07/that-pesky-end-of-the-year-tax-stuff-organization/

photo 2 (2)

Fourth – There is no fourth – you are finished! No mail. No piles. Done. Go enjoy yourself and let your mind be free.

Do you have a system for dealing with the mail? If so, what is your system? If not, uh – what are you waiting for!?

As always, thanks for stopping by. I hoped you found the post informative. Should you have any questions, please comment.

Utilizing the Key Ring App on Technology Thursday

It is a foregone conclusion that way too many people out there are running out to purchase iPhones and then not utilizing them! It seems that everywhere I go, I end up teaching someone about an app.

If you follow my blog, you have already been witness to some of my screwups – like tripling my contacts, etc. You can take it from me – on good authority – that there is simply no reason not to play around with apps and your phone. If you mess something up, you simply head on over to iTunes and begin searching, because I promise you – there is an app to fix it because someone else has already beat you to the screwup.

We all have those pesky store discount cards dangling from our already full key rings – well, not me. But, they were corralled in my wallet, taking up valuable real estate.

I was doing one of my favorite pass time hobbies – surfing iTunes. Does anyone else do this? I came across an app that was named quite appropriately –  Key Ring App

No longer do you have to shove an actual key ring full of store discount cards in your purse, or heaven forbid, your pocket.

You simply scan all of your cards (library, store, hotel, etc.) into the app using your phone camera. When you check out at a store that you have a card for, simple open up your app and the cashier will scan the bar code from your phone. The app can also be shared with another person.

You can have all of the individual store apps on your phone, but I have had others tell me that they sometimes have trouble while attempting to scan at the stores. This app has never given me any problems, AND the bonus is that they are all located in one app, not scattered around my phone.

This app also sports additional features are just plain wonderful! Using your GPS, it will find store promotions in your area.

The ‘Offers’ icon finds and shows me the coupons available through the stored cards I entered.

Under the ‘Sales‘ icon, I can view the sale papers of the stores where I have loyalty cards. No more searching high and low for the sale papers when I’m ready to shop!

Did I mention that it is also FREE! How great is that!

I would love to hear from you. Do you use Key Ring or another similar app?

Be sure to follow my blog and tune in next Thursday for another episode of ‘Technology Thursday’.

Technology Thursday – A Gem called Evernote

Access anywhere.
I am going to try and do this app justice. It is by far my favorite app (other than the app I just found named “Donna” – who is almost as good as I am at organizing you) and there are  additional apps that work along with the main app so that you have no excuse not to be organized! It is perfect for the organizational challenged!

I think I first saw Evernote in a segment done by Carley Knobloch on Digitwirl .
She has a lot of three-minute videos on different apps that you will find very helpful in organizing and simplifying your life.

I actually downloaded Evernote twice to my iPhone. I guess my head wasn’t in a place to comprehend the app or something. I think we all have those days. I then downloaded it a second time and haven’t looked back since. In fact, anyone who stands still long enough will find themselves listening to me rave about this app and they just have to download it. Ummm. Is that why people duck around corners and cross the street when they see me?

First of all, I love the way this app syncs across iPhones, tablets, and your computer, so all of your information is accessible at all times. You may be in the market and think, “If only I had that recipe.” Now, you can. Save it to Evernote and never be without those recipe ingredients again! And, when all your dinner guests are raving about the great meal, you can email or message the recipe straight from Evernote to them. This goes for any of the photos or information that you have stored in Evernote. Share with Hubby or share with friends and family with just a click.

I began with a folder called “Recipes”. It has now evolved into subcategories (sub-folders), which I love. I have sub-folders such as Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert, Drinks, etc. For that reason, I suggest you think about what folders you want to set up. I have a “Decorating” folder and then sub-folders for different rooms. And, don’t despair  You can move folders around, add more, delete some, or make folders into sub-folders.

Capture anything. You set the folders and the sub-folders to fit your lifestyle. I literally use this app for everything. It allows me to keep my medical information and the research I’ve done on my blood disorders at my fingertips. This way, I can compare the last blood work with the current at a glance. Then, I have a Travel folder with sub-folders on different places that we would like to visit.

Do you have kiddies? Set up a category named “School” and add subfolders for each child. Keep photos of permission slips, supply lists, schedule of when lunch fees are due, etc. and have everything ready at your fingertips.

With Christmas on the horizon – it will be here before we know it – Evernote will keep me organized! I set up the main category of Christmas and then added a sub-folder for each child and grandchild. I keep a list of their sizes along with their wish lists in their individual folders. Any item I purchase gets checked off. I can also email the list straight from Evernote to the little one’s parent along with a photo of an outfit or toy to get their opinion on. I can’t think of anything easier!

Are you a mail-order person like me? I have a folder which I labeled Deliveries. I do most of my shopping on-line so Evernote fits right in. Once I complete my purchase and my confirmation comes up, instead of printing, I save it to Evernote with just a click. I can quickly open up the Deliveries folder to check on what I ordered. I also set up a folder with check-boxes for each delivery. As I order, I add a check-box and the company’s name. Once it is delivered, I check it off. I also keep up with returns this way. Evernote has no idea the number of trees it has saved! Do you think that is why the icon is green? Definitely food for thought.

Another folder I have in Evernote is Articles to Read. I don’t know about you, but I am quite a busy bee and do not always have the time to read articles from my in-box on the spot. I quickly click over to the webpage and save the article for later reading (as in the check-out line at the market or the traffic light).

Find things fast.I use Google Chrome so I have the little Evernote icon at the top which makes this process simple. I just click the icon and choose my folder and click save. Evernote will choose a file based on the content of the article you are saving and most of the time, it’s correct. Now, I can read those “must reads” any time I have a spare moment. All of the extensions can be found in the Google Chrome “store”.

Another icon and feature of Evernote is a web clipper.  It is called Clearly and the icon sports a lamp. Clicking Clearly cleans up the text on the page and eliminates all the extras in the sidebars (ads). Sometimes it forgets the picture and when that happens, try clicking Evernote instead, as it will clean up the page fairly well. Too much info included, that’s okay. Just go to your note and delete the portion you don’t need. Now, you can see how Evernote will work for recipes. I don’t know about you, but I love my pictures, especially of food.

See a book you want to read? Snap a photo of the book and save it to your folder, “Books I want to read”. See anything you love? Snap a photo, take a few notes.

I keep track of errands and my last three Cookie Swaps. I certainly don’t want to serve the same food twice! Your imagination is the limit! And, if  the number of folders I have in Evernote is any indication, you will see my imagination runs rampant! AND, you can set reminders with alarms! How cool is that? Yep! It’s cool.

Evernote has endless possibilities on the web and just as many on your iPhone. If you would like to hear more about how those apps work, just leave a message and I’ll be more than happy to write about them.

I love the Clipper app (surf the web on your phone and automatically save highlights and then re-order them as you see fit and save to Evernote), FastEver (allows me to jot notes to myself, hit enter, and it automatically goes to Evernote), and vJournal (I can send my journal entries and pictures straight to Evernote). There are a few more, but these are my favorites.

How-to-Use-Evernote-to-Organize-Your-Vacation-Plans

Just recently, I used it to corral all of my information about our trip to a convention. I saved my hotel reservations and the itinerary for the weekend. From the hotel confirmation, I was able to access maps to view the route we took to convention. I saved my list of items I needed to pack for the different functions. Between Trip-It and Evernote, all of my information was at the ready.
Did I mention Evernote is free? It’s FREE!

I would love to hear if you use Evernote. If not, what organization apps do you use?

So, in Carley’s words:

1) Download Evernote
2) Store your info
3) Add tags or categories
4) Never forget anything again

View Carley’s video on Evernote here! You’ll be glad you did!

Technology Thursday: A Personal Assistant App that WORKS!

personal assistant app Donna

You just have to love an app that is named after you! Especially one that is organized! You can only imagine the number of people I’ve told about this app.

This amazing app is a personal assistant app named after the amazing assistant character Donna Moss from The West Wing. It’s user friendly and did I mention AMAZING?! (You can never have TOO many amazings.) And shares my name?!

What makes DONNA so amazing?

  • She syncs with all of the “stuff” on your smart phone: calendars, contact info, GPS, etc.productivity app, donna
  • She reminds you of appointments, checks traffic to estimate travel time, and checks the weather to let you know if you need an umbrella.
  • She calculates when you need to leave so you’ll be on time AND THEN SHE REMINDS YOU!!!!

It is seriously like having another “me” along for the ride. I can be my own assistant.

 Ever find yourself running late?

We’ve all found ourselves being late for a meeting because we forgot to consider traffic, how long it takes to park, or even our route there? Donna (love that name) pays attention for you so you can focus on other things. She’ll let you know when it’s time to go—and even phone you if you want.

  • She’s intuitive, productivity app, donna so even if you don’t know an exact location, she can guess & help you figure things out.

  • In addition to detailed directions, traffic info, and parking tips, she can even send photos of the building you’re trying to find!

assistant app, donna

  • If you have a conference call, she can dial it for you & handle any access codes needed to connect.
  • If you’re meeting with someone who typically runs late, she can send them a reminder to stay on track.
  • If you’re running behind schedule, she can notify the people you’re meeting to let them know what’s up.
  • She can even book a car for you.

scheduling app, donna

Donna will notify you the night before and let you know your schedule, the weather, and when to leave to arrive on time, as well as what the restaurant looks like so you’ll be sure not to miss it.

Donna

“It’s going to be 54º and raining when you get to “Dinner with Ari.”

Don’t forget your umbrella!

Connect Directly to Meetings

Donna

“It’s almost time for your “11:00AM” meeting with Amy. Shall I dial you in?”

No more rummaging for clumsy conference access codes or finding that one app to connect to a meeting. When Donna notifies you of a conference call starting, she will automatically connect you and dial the code for you—without even looking at the app.

Beautiful design. Easy to use. Intuitive. FREE.

“Good assistants give you what you ask for; great assistants get you what you need before you even ask for it.” — Don.na

I love this app. When she notifies me of an upcoming event I have to refrain from saying, “Yes mam, and would you order yourself a huge bouquet of flowers?”

Which apps do you use for organizing? Have you tried Donna?
