In the fabulous and intrigue-packed new novel from Holly Peterson, the New York Times bestselling author of THE MANNY, THE IDEA OF HIM explores the dangers of falling for the idea of a person, and why facing reality is more liberating than we ever dreamed it could be. For anyone who’s let the fear of being alone keep them from seeing who someone really is, THE IDEA OF HIM is an inspiring, action-packed story of what happens when we embrace our own power and allow the truth to finally set us free.

Allie Crawford has the life she always dreamed of-she’s number two at a high-profile P.R. firm; she has two kids she adores; and her husband is a blend of handsome and heroic. Wade is everything she thought a man was supposed to be-he’s running a successful newsmagazine and, best of all, he provides the stable yet exciting New York City life Allie believes she needs in order to feel secure and happy.

But when Allie finds Wade locked in their laundry room with a stunning blonde in snakeskin sandals, a scandal ensues that flips her life on its head. And when the woman wants to befriend Allie, an old flame calls, and a new guy gets a little too close for comfort, she starts to think her marriage is more of a facade than something real. Maybe she’s fallen in love not with Wade-but with the idea of him.

Captivating and seductive, told in the whip-smart voice of a woman who is working hard to keep her parenting and career on track, The Idea of Him is a novel of conspiracy, intrigue, and intense passion-and discovering your greatest strength through your deepest fears.

Holly Peterson is the author of the New York Time sand international best seller, The Manny. She was a Contributing Editor for Newsweek and editor-at-large for Tina Brown‘s Talk magazine. She was also an Emmy Award-winning producer for ABC News for more than a decade, where she covered global politics. Her writing has been published in the New York Times, Newsweek, Talk, the Daily Beast, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other publications.

My Review:

Just reading the book blurb for THE IDEA OF HIM tells you everything I would want to put into my review. It describes the book accurately and gives you a taste of what you’ll find between the covers. Yes, that is what the blurb is supposed to do. The book is full of intrigue and mystery and makes you think evaluate every relationship in your life. Are the friendships, relationships, for real or do you see past the “Idea of” whom the relationship is with. I will find the occasional book title or blurb that resonates me a little more than usual and THE IDEA OF HIM definitely fit the bill.

THE IDEA OF HIM by Holly Peterson really made me pause and re-evaluate a few relationships in my own life. The book has found mixed reviews and I tend to lean toward to the better of them. Even though I was provided with an uncorrected copy of the book for review, I found the book (other than a few minor grammatical errors) to be a strong book with a lot going for it. I loved the way the author opened up the book, working in a flashback from childhood as the protagonist rides in a taxi in New York City with a less than desirable cabbie. Having been to New York City on several occasions and finding myself in the backseat of cab weaving its way in and out of traffic, slamming on brakes, and working the horn, I would say that many nightmare flashbacks have found their way into the fray. But, what this opening did, was pull me immediately into the book.

I’m giving THE IDEA OF HIM five stars. I really enjoyed the thought-provoking book.

I had the chance to chat with Holly and she was kind enough to answer a couple of my questions.

Why do you write and you tell me a little something about yourself that no one really knows.

No one really knows that I’m a Manhattan hard-working mom with three kids and I often get up really early in the morning and surf in the Rockaways…the area of Queens that was hit so hard by hurricane Sandy.  I actually started surfing when I was 42 years old… my brother’s beautiful wife was dying of cancer in August of that year…and I felt so sad that I walked on the beaches in Long Island in the mornings just to cry.  There were always surfers out there in the dew-y morning light and the water is so calm at that time of day I thought, I should try to surf out there, it might be fun to paddle out.

So…I took a lesson with my then ten-year-old daughter, got pushed into waves by some funny instructors, and somehow I stood up my first time. Now I surf all over the world and it is my absolute healing therapy to be in the salt water. I yearn for it and I crave it.

I call the saltwater “amniotic” because it brings us back from whence we all came. It’s elemental to slosh around in the saltwater when a wave makes me tumble in three backwards somersaults. I don’t fear that; in fact, that’s the feeling I crave! I look like hell, I have very long hair that gets tangled in my face, I wear zinc globbed onto my face thick as cake frosting which makes me look like a weird woman ghost, but I don’t care because I’m smiling and so happy the entire time.

Writing doesn’t work unless you get deep inside yourself. That’s where you find your true feelings in nascent form that you may have never discovered. My new novel, THE IDEA OF HIM, is about a woman named Allie Crawford who has fallen for the “idea” of her husband (and certain other men) and she suddenly wakes up to reality to find that he’s not what she wanted him to be. In fact, everything in Allie’s life is looking more like an illusion of a happy life than the real deal.

As she gathers the strength to face that reality and make choices, the narrative of the book really takes off.  Surfing helped me to realize a lot of things in my life weren’t as I wanted: my work, my marriage, some of my relationships.  It got me facing my deepest fears and hidden feelings I’d been trying to ignore.

We all have fallen for the “idea” of someone at some point…the long hair, the cool accent, the bizarre background….traits that attract us to someone. Problem is sometimes we get a little too excited about those “ideas” and when reality hits…what do we do next?

Sometimes we are so entrenched in the relationship and our “idea” of what we wanted it to be, that we are scared to leave. Sometimes the fear of being alone trips us up into staying when we shouldn’t. Allie Crawford in THE IDEA OF HIM is facing that fear head on and I hope you’ll laugh, cry, and RELATE to her quest to gain enough strength to make the right choices in her life.
